Friend of mine needs a a decent electric guitar

but ermm, one of my friends needs a decent electric guitar + ampHow does he intend to use the guitar and amp? For home or gig? What genre of music does he play? All this will determine the type of axe you are getting.
I suppose with $400, you can get a decent entry level guitar for between $180 and $250 (from Strat and Tele to Les Paul and SG copies at Davis), and a 15W amp for around $150 - $200 from most established brands.
Best way is to go down to Swee Lee or Davis or City Music or Ranking Sports or Luther and try the guitars and amp within your budget.
On the other hand, you can always get second hand some of the better guitars from Luther Classifieds or Yahoo auctions. For amps it is not so critical at this point and you get buy a decent new amp at a reasonable price. But you got to know your guitars when buying second hand. Best that you get someone who knows how to assess the quality of the guitar.

The popular choices would be a SSH Strat copy(about $200) or an SG copy (about $250). An LP copy usually cost a bit more, usually $300 onwards.
Davis usually has a good selection of budget guitars which you can use, and after a while if you want to upgrade, sell the budget guitar cheap on the second hand market. You don't lose that much if you are just paying between $200 and $250 for a new guitar. And the guitars play pretty decent too.

I remember Sweelee has a Squier package... Includes Guitar + Amp (both Squier) gig bag... No idea if strap is in the package. Or yamaha, they have lotsa good packages. Drop by Plaza Singapura's Yamaha and check it out. ^^
And yeah, Davis has lotsa good budget guitars. I recommend the Samick SG. 250 only. Tried it in my friend's house, sounds decent. Good luck. : )
