FORGOTTEN and RELATIVELY UNKNOWN Bands/Musicians

ok, i suddenly have this idea of posting some FORGOTTEN or RELATIVELY UNKNOWN bands/musicians/guitarists. hopefully this might help open-up the ears/minds of musicians/listeners of SOFTies to something they might not usually listen to, or not heard of. the music is going to span a wide range from jazz, blues, metal, alternative, fusion, etc...

ok, to start off, this is from a band labelled 'Alternative' then. they were HUGE during their prime years. i got a chance to experience the band live when they were last here in 95 or 96 when i landed a job as a temp stage hand then. bad turn-out but top-notched performance from the band. this is a live bootleg from their concert in 96.

i think lots of SOFTies still do remember this band. anw, hope u guys enjoi this!

Jawbreaker

Echoist: Ha Smashing Pumpkins.....ya brings back memories.

Well if I think of overlooked I will think of Jawbreaker, they were this indie band that got signed by Geffen during the whole grunge craze (eventhough they were more punk than grunge), released an album called Dear You but were completely ignored by the mainstream. Probably for not being grungy enough

Their lyrics are very interesting , a lot of wordplay (Sample: I cut in line, I bled to death, when I got to you there was nothing left").

But Dear You is now considered a punk classic but is out of print, so the original one sells for 100 on eBay. I have one so it's kinda cool. :)

i think most people have never heard of this band, but have listened and said "wow!" to their 3 hits: "lake of fire", "plateau" and "oh me".

the band is meat puppets, and 2 of their members were playing during the Nirvana MTV Acoustic. Kurt Cobain had mentioned them as an influence, and they practically bugged Kurt Cobain until he agreed to give them a slot.

would like to post mp3s, but well copyright is copyright. most fortunately, someone has posted their lives (a whole ton) on his website.

http://www.wohlers.org/puppets/

the downside is that the puppets were high into drugs during their latter days (shortly after they got famous), so most of the lives were as crazy, flimsy and psychedelic as they were.

songs to check out: backwater, violet eyes, whirlpool, another moon, sam (check out the opening lick!), open wide, automatic mojo, nail it down, shine, roof with a hole, we don't exist. (i much prefer the latter days, although if you're REALLY into the psychedelia you'd prefer the earlier stuff.)

and yes, they are one of my favourite bands until now.

I'm gonna talk about Ani Difranco. (What a surprise)

Acoustic singer/songwriter from Buffalo, New York. Started her own label instead of signing for a record company( lots of big ones have offered) and now earns more than what big stars earn.

VERY good with the acoustic. You should hear her live tracks. Whoa. Got energy too. Vocals are great. One of my favourite lyricists as well.

She's very political. Anti-Bush(yay). Thinks that the Socialist path is the way to go(don't really agree with her on this one though).

For a peek at her skills, listen to Knuckle Down. Check out her lyrics there too. And to listen to a poemsong she wrote about the 911, listen to Self Evident (i really love this one).

A live track. Must-listen.

Yep.

Yeah ... Ani Defranco ... heard her stufff ... quite interestingly expressive.

I'm thinking about Vonda Shepherd .... she writes good songs .... so does Sarah Mac ... but they are still around ... so not really that forgotten. :)

How about Sound Garden? Super Unknown and Black hole sun ... some of my faves when i was in sec school. :)

:) audioslave fans should remember chris cornell. i love the weird timing on the black hole sun solo... absolutely blew my mind when i found out it was NOT 4/4. (it sounded so natural man!)

amanda, thanks for the ani difranco live. i've always wanted to check out her music but never got to doing it. :)

Supergrooves....

I only heard one album from them.. and I still keep it.. Scorpio Girls.... damn tight playing... ultra coolness.... I Loike~~

Another band would be.... Screaming Headless Torsos. They are wicked!!

Not forgetting Casiopea and T-Square. Madness playing!!

Mr Echoist.... can You play for us some tunes on your guitar? You are one good guitarist.... I've seen you play before!!

Vonda Shepard!!! Whoa....she da bomb. Ally McBEal....hahaha

Anyone remember Blind Melon? I love the song Tones of Home. Funky track.

If you get your hands on GuitarOne mag, the last page always features the Where Are They Now? kinda of article where they update the readers on what's been happening with some of the guitarists that we have forgotten.

jeff buckley and tim buckley

Tim was Jeff's father... a folk/rock/jazz/avantgarde singer-songwriter.. BEAUTIFUL VOICE!.. broke musical boundaries

Jeff was more of alternative rock. one of the best singers of all time. such a shame they both died so young. Jeff Buckley was very influenced by artistes such as Robert Plant, Nusrat Ali Fateh Khan, Nina Simone and many others... EXTRAORDINARY vocal range..

huhh??? aiyoh Marlb0r0... where did u see me play? must be wrong person la... i cannot even describe my playing as below average! hehehehehhh... anw if u've seen me play n u think i'm good, then thanks la!!! hahahahahha... must take compliments graciously laaaa!

Ani DiFranco, is one of the best political/singer/songwriter. somewhere up there with Ben Harper. an acoustic goddess in a very anarchic way. always playing in very unconcentional alternate tunings. i actually love her earlier albums when she was at her political/righteous/pro-feminist best, especially the live double CD 'Living In Clip". that was recorded circa 95-96. and also the album 'Dilate.' somehow she started to mellow down circa 'Living Plastic Castle' album.

Screaming Headless Torsos is so "out" fusion jazz+funk stuff. features David Fiuzynski in guitar. damned funky/weird/out good stuff there. loved the way he uses the trem! played with John Medeski (keys/organ guy in MartinMedeskiWood funk/fusion/groove/jazz band) too. he's playing in all sorts of fusion bands now.

here's one from KIF. this is a mixture of jungle+jazz+funk+indian, so out. that's his signature trem style there:

what happened to Sonic Youth? Stereophonics? Kula Shaker? Stereo MCs?
not forgetting to mention Mudhoney, Toad the Wet Sprockett, Matthew Sweet, Crash Test Dummies, Better than Ezra..

ok..there's a lot more but i'll cut it at that..

are we gonna see em on some reality show one day? lol.

Echoist: billy corgan went on to form Zwan rite? never heard of their materials before tho..

hahahahhha... yeah, all those bands u mentioned too actually! but i have to find their materials that won't get us into trouble posting here! (damned copyright infringemnet rules! hehehehehh...)

and yes, billy corgan and jimmy chambers (i think!) formed Zwan. they're mellow and 'happy lovey' now. but disbanded i think. i have their bootleg stuff. but will post later la...
