fender bass

actually SX basses are quite decent really, a pickup change and maybe a good setup and they can actually sound better than a fender p/j. good woods and somewhat quality construction help
yeah agreed. too bad davis doesn't import more models. i find the sx much better than the tgm.

i was thinking of getting a cheap SX bass from rondo and modding it with SD hot p / j and getting some copper shielding for the electronics cavity in the body. what do you guys think of this?

cant wait to plunk down SDs in my sx now. i'll post clips when i finish modding my sx. 8)
is it a p or a j?
i have a set of qp p which i'm gonna change to bill lawrence when he makes them (could be 3-6 months) so if ur looking for a qp precision and the timing is right, could let u have it for a good price.

Read from some fender forum. They say MIJ quality are very much the same as MIA but it's very much cheaper. I own a MIJ one and I like my bass very much. Feels solid but the electronics is a little crappy though. Was thinking of going seymour duncan haha

it's not quite 'the same' but 'on par'.

with both guitars/ basses, the Jap models aren't quite accurate in the overall weight of the instrument. some people like the lighter Jap version, some say they hear bass frequency deficiencies. however, if you like what you hear, do not split hairs... 8)

Hi guys, might be off topic here, but I've finally been able to find a way to record myself on the computer (comp moron alert!)

Anyway, I recorded myself playing this bass:

And here are some clips: http://rentabass.multiply.com/music/item/1

Three soundclips, two of me slapping and the other of me noodling fingerstyle.

Had to record "slapnoodle 2", cos I thought I really screwed up with the first one..... :?

Mistakes are abundant, please pardon me for my poor technique.

nice stuff there rentabass... did u roll back the tone knob for fingertone?

ahh yes, i'm looking to owning a fender jazz now... initially wanted to try a JBV but dang they got limited choices of that one, and the one u can easily get from ishibashi isnt as appealing as the IV string counterparts...

how are the different jazz basses, different? how does the varying properties such as alder/ash/basswood, vintage US pups/vintage standard/, rosewood/maple work in favour of the tone? and are there ANY 22 fretted ones... o.O

Generally, alder/ash bodies tend 2 haf a heavier n more bassy sound while basswood basses which tend to b lighter, haf a slightly brighter sound wif more tone.

rosewood fretboards tend 2 gif a warmer tone while maple fretboards tend 2 gif a brighter tone.

as 4 the pups, diff pups gif slightly diff sound, or in some cases very diff. some more mids, some more bass, some more trebles. depends on what you want.

Body Woods:
Alder generally has a very warm, wide sound. Notes have a very nice blossom to them.

Ash typically yields a very aggressive tone, with loads of bite. The denser examples of Ash (Hard Ash) tend to be a little weaker in the bottom end, with most of the bite coming from the high mids.

Swamp Ash has a tone that sort of falls in between Ash and Alder. It's got a little more bottom end to it in comparison to Ash, while still retaining some of the bite of Ash. Nice growl and articulation.

Fingerboard Woods:
Rosewood is mellow sounding, lacks a bit of clarity and articulation.

Maple is slightly brighter, with better clarity. Notes are more defined and are able to cut through better.

I think 22 fret Jazz Basses do exist, although all of mine are 20 fret ones

Oh yes, forgot to mention that I didn't roll off the tone at all for most of the basses. The tone is always wide open.

ahh ic... haven't used many fenders and my fender P gives a biting sharp tone (maybe cuz i was mad and went to put DR sunbeams on them) hence my Q on the tone knob...

*sighs* yup, i cant find any MIJ 22 frets... they're all MIA...

curiously, has anybody seen a cream blue Fender J? i recently saw a snapshot of it on some other bass site and boy does it look awesome... so far only cream vintage white, and the only available for order cream blue is an alder/basswood fender J on ishibashi
