Faulty volume knob

Hi there,

There seems to be some problem with the volume knob on my Stratocaster. The turning of the knob doesn't seem to end and the the metal attached underneath doesn't seem to move at all. Moreover, the turning of the knob takes more effort now and feels very stiff.

Is it because the inner part requires oiling? Or it the ailment due to some other cause?

It's time for a change.

I find that if I don't play my strat often enough, the volume/tone knobs become stiff until one day it won't even turn. I stripped my knobs forcing it to turn.

If u're handy with a soldering iron, it's quite easy to do. The potentiometers can be bought for a couple of dollars at a guitar shop or less at Sim Lim Towers.

Just be careful not to overheat and damage the capacitor while soldering. Otherwise you'll find that turning the tone knobs does nothing.

Sorry for the late reply. Sometimes the pots can be salvaged with a lubricating contact cleaner like servisol. However, I would recommend a pot change most of the time. As for the type of pots, it's very hard to find audio taper pots in the 250k and 500k values at Sim Lim so I'll recommend buying the pots from guitar stores instead
