Lehmann - We have unfinished business in Europe
By Mo Khan

Jens Lehmann says Arsenal have unfinished business in the Champions League and he aims to replicate last year’s run to the final in the coming campaign.

The German goalkeeper was as influential as anyone as the Gunners stormed past Real Madrid, Juventus and Villarreal on their way to a showpiece final against Barcelona in Paris last season.

But that ill-fated night in the French capital, which saw Lehmann sent off for a professional foul after just 17 minutes and Arsenal lose 2-1, has left the 36-year-old more determined than ever to lift club football’s biggest prize.

“Of course if you don’t win it, it’s unfinished [business],” he said.

“But all of the teams, at one stage, will have disappointment during the season. Only one team can win the Champions League, one team can win the World Cup — so all the other teams will be disappointed. I hope that we will go further this year.”

Despite that heart-breaking defeat to the Primera Liga champions, Lehmann says he enjoyed his football last season — especially the road to Paris — and the desire to do likewise this term motivates him.

“I’ve enjoyed the football,” he said. “Especially the World Cup and before [that], the time with Arsenal in the Champions League.

“I think it was a great time. Not only for the Club, for me as well. But you want to accomplish that again — to go to the finals. That’s my motivation for this year.”

Arsenal may have been a whisker away from being crowned European champions but their domestic form took a dive last year. Their fourth-placed finish in the Premiership was the first time Arsenal had ended a season outside the top two since the 1996/97 campaign. Lehmann insists that is an area they must improve on this term.

“Obviously we have to perform better than last season,” he said.

“I am confident but I know how difficult that’s going to be. Obviously we have to perform better than last season. Of course we had a very good European campaign but the domestic [form] wasn’t up to our standards and so we have to improve.”

Arsenal1Gilberto 83

Aston Villa1Mellberg 54

By Richard Clarke

For a while the house-warming party looked it might fall flat but a late arrival did enough to lift the Arsenal spirits on an historic day at Emirates Stadium.

The Club’s new home had been opened last month when they said goodbye to Dennis Bergkamp. So perhaps it was fitting that the arrival of a major new attacking talent would help save face in the first Premiership match at the ground

Theo Walcott came off the bench in the 73rd minute. His impact was immediate and, 11 minutes later, the 17-year-old's cultured cross was nodded down for Gilberto to smash home a joyous equaliser. It was no more than Arsenal deserved on the day.

They had been the better side until Olof Mellberg headed Villa in front eight minutes after the interval. The visitors were organised and committed throughout but their ambition was limited.

Maybe this was not the sweetest start for Arsenal at Emirates Stadium but at least they did not have to swallow the bitter pill of defeat.

Wenger was without a raft of players for the curtain-raiser. Philippe Senderos [shoulder], Gael Clichy [foot], Abou Diaby [ankle], Tomas Rosicky [groin], Jose Antonio Reyes [groin] and Lauren [knee] were all injured while Ashley Cole was left out amid the speculation surrounding his proposed move to Chelsea.

It meant Freddie Ljungberg was brought back early from his ankle problem. Justin Hoyte and Johan Djourou retained their places on the left and centre of the defence respectively.

Arsenal were quicker off the blocks. Emmanuel Eboue strode into the area in the fifth minute and nearly fooled Thomas Sorensen with a rising near-post effort. The big Danish keeper had to adjust his body in midair to tip the ball over the bar. Adebayor met the resulting corner with a firm, downward header but Jlloyd Samuel, stationed on the post, managed to block the shot on the line.

The home side continued to have the better of the game with Eboue particularly eye-catching with his raids from right back. But Villa would have their moments. Emirates Stadium held its collective breathe when Juan Pablo Angel went through midway through the first half. Djourou calmed any fears with a well-timed sliding challenge.

Before that Henry flicked wide but it was flagged offside, Gilberto's shot was deflected past the post and Cesc Fabregas drove over the bar.

On the stroke of half time, Arsenal 'scored'. However once again the assistant referee flagged, this time because Kolo Toure had strayed offside just before nodding in a floated Fabregas free-kick

Arsenal had greater urgency at the start of the second half and, in the opening minutes, it seemed that Henry and Adebayor had almost too many options in front of goal.

The wake-up call would be swift and sharp. In the 52nd minute, Villa won corner on the left and Steven Davis swung it to the near post. Lehmann, Adebayor and Mellberg converged on it but the Swede got the crucial touch. His header flew into the net and for once the Arsenal fans were silent. The Villa contingent were ecstatic.

Arsenal responded immediately. Hoyte sent over a regulation cross from the left. Villa defence panicked and Adebayor stole in at the near post. He flicked the ball past Sorensen at the near post but Ridgewell slid in to block the Togolese striker’s shot on the line.

Eboue had a near-post drive batted aside by Sorensen as Arsenal cranked up the pressure. Robin van Persie replaced Adebayor then, in the 73rd minute, Walcott came on for the flagging Ljungberg. Wenger had used both his attacking substitutes — he was going for broke.

The 17-year-old made an instant impact. In the 75th minute his trick started a move that ended up with Eboue hitting the bar.

By now the Villa defence, so strong for so long, was looking weary. They were starting to hang on. Ridgewell flicked a header over his own bar and Hleb saw a long range effort blocked

Then, finally, the equaliser arrived. Walcott clipped over a cross from the left, Van Persie challenged Samuel for the header and the ball fell nicely for Gilberto to lash home a shot at the far post. There was only one word applicable — relief.

Arsenal stormed the Villa goal in pursuit of the winner. The nearest they came was when Henry trickled a shot wide in injury time.

Walcott - I felt at home the first time I touched the ball

It took only one touch for Theo Walcott to become accustomed to life in the Arsenal first team.

The 17-year-old made his long-awaited debut as a 73rd-minute substitute against Aston Villa on Saturday. He made an immediate impact and even played a part in Arsenal’s equaliser four minutes from time.

“It was a big experience to come on with all these world class players and 60,000 people here,” Walcott said afterwards. “It was a really big thing for me. I didn't even expect to be in the squad but I was so up for it.

“I know I have worked hard to get there. I have been waiting a long time. I have been so patient and I have to thank the boss for playing me.

“Once I had the first touch of the ball, the confidence just came into me.”

Walcott’s selection for the England World Cup squad means he has enjoyed many more newspaper column inches than Premiership minutes. That equation will start to change from now on.

“The World Cup was a brilliant experience for me,” he said. “Dealing with the pressure and watching how players prepared for big games has helped, but now it's gone I just want to think about Arsenal.

“[Against Villa] the boss just told me to go and do the stuff that got me in the squad. I’d like to play centre forward, but I don't mind where I play - left, right or up front - as long as I'm on the pitch I am happy.

“[On Saturday] I just wanted to come off the bench and do well. Now I want to get a start. I’ll just work hard in training and see where it takes me.”

Almunia in but Wenger tries to retain status quo
Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb
Champions League Leg 2

By Richard Clarke

Jens Lehmann’s omission is the only change in Arsène Wenger’s squad for the Champions League third qualifying round second leg tie with Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

The German keeper has suffered a slight knee problem. Apart from that Arsène Wenger will name the same 16 which picked up a point against Aston Villa on Saturday. However two more places are available for Champions League games so Alex Song and Jeremie Aliadiere have been drafted in.

The retention of the status quo means Ashley Cole is still absent in the wake of his desire to leave Arsenal. Otherwise the injury list reads as follows: Philippe Senderos (shoulder), Gael Clichy (foot), Abou Diaby (ankle), Tomas Rosicky (groin), Jose Antonio Reyes (groin) and Lauren (knee)

“Lehmann has a slight knee problem so Manuel Almunia will play,” said Wenger at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference

“Tomas Rosicky is not in the squad but Freddie Ljungberg is in. In fact, we have exactly the same squad as against Aston Villa plus Song and Aliadiere.”

Arsenal2Ljungberg 77, Flamini 90

Dinamo Zagreb1da Silva 12

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal came from behind to secure their first ever victory at Emirates Stadium and safe passage into the Champions League group stage with a 2-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

Arsène Wenger’s side already had a handsome 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Croatia but, when Eduardo scored in the 11th minute, there was more than a little concern.

Arsenal should have levelled before the break but the visitors gradually grew in confidence as the game went on. However the introduction of more experienced heads settle any nerves. In his first game as captain, Freddie Ljungberg nodded home the equaliser 13 minutes from the end. Then, deep into injury time, the unmarked Mathieu Flamini scored from close range.

The home side will put in much better performance’s at this great stadium. But this was good enough for tonight and, more importantly, they achieved all their objectives in the tie.

The three most experienced players in the first-team squad were omitted tonight as Wenger relied on the younger elements of his squad to complete the job of qualification.

Jens Lehmann had picked up a knee injury so Manuel Almunia stepped in. In contrast, Henry and Gilberto were perfectly fit yet they still dropped to the bench to allow Robin van Persie and Flamini to step in. Theo Walcott was on the bench despite his eye-catching cameo against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Emirates Stadium was resplendent for both its first night game and European tie. Despite a 3-0 lead, Wenger had said he would remind his side of the need for focus and concentration. They did not heed his warning.

After only 11 minutes, Zagreb grabbed an unlikely goal. Eduardo broke down the left and pushed the ball into the path of Etto just inside the area. He cut it back into the area and when Toure failed to clear the ball effectively it fell nicely for the Brazilian-born Croatian international to strike left-footed into the far corner of the net.

For the third time in their first three games at Emirates, Arsenal were behind.

However in Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial and the Premiership game with Villa, the home side had revived themselves sufficiently to avoid defeat. In the minutes that followed tonight’s team, via Van Persie, did their best to repeat the trick

Fabregas floated over a free-kick Toure nodded down and the Dutchman let fly from the right-side of the area. It looked certain to find the net but Jasmin Agic stretched out a leg to divert the ball onto the bar.

A couple of minutes later Van Persie tricked Mario Cvitanovic close to the byline but his keeper Ivan Turina blocked his shot at the near post. Ljungberg had a effort saved and Adebayor nodded over as the Zagreb goal started to lead a charmed life.

But there was a shot across the bows, literally, in the 31st minute when Luka Modric crossed low and the stretching Ognjen Vukojevic just failed to convert a cross at the far post.

Arsenal response was more and more pressure however Turina was never unduly troubled and, in injury time, Etto thumped an effort past Almunia’s right-hand post.

If anything the visitors looked like they were warming to their task after half time. However Adebayor should have calmed Arsenal fears in the 53rd minute when Zoran Mamic diverted the ball into his path 12 yards. The unmarked Togolese striker thumped the ball over the bar when he should have scored.

The goal just would not come so with 25 minutes left Wenger threw on Henry. It was a just-to-make-sure substitution.

Despite seeing Eduardo’s free-kick whistled just past the post, Zagreb were no longer looking like they could grab another and Wenger brought on Gilberto shortly afterwards probably to shore up the midfield. In fact, it heralded the two vital goals.

With 13 minutes left, Carlos De Jesus fouled Emmanuel Eboue on the right. Van Persie put over the free-kick and Ljungberg, probably the smallest player on the pitch, flicked home a header into the far corner.

It was the Dutchman’s last touch, he was replaced by Walcott. The 17-year-old once again made a telling late contribution. In the final seconds he crossed low for the unmarked Flamini completed the victory with almost the last kick of the game.

i really hope that gallas comes in for arsenal.
they have some minor problems with the defence now in my opinion. lets see what wenger has in store for us gunners.

Oh yeah seems like boro is their bogey team, but this was a team that let in 3 to reading less than a week ago, so it does raise questions about chelsea's strikeforce. The match report I read said that drogba and andriy did not really get together.

I am kind of surprised by man u, i thought they would struggle because of their crap central midfield, and especially now cos Rooney is out so they are a little thin up front. But yeah it's only 2 matches but I am hoping they keep it up and add some pressure on Chelsea for once since last 2 seasons it's the other way round.

And fgl , think it would be better if you just posted the links to the reports (quote part of it if needed), rather than just reproduce them wholesale which is kind of pointless imo. Just my 2 cents worth.
