Arsenal sign Auxerre full-back Bacary Sagna

Bacary Sagna has highlighted the appeal of working with Arsene Wenger as a prominent factor in deciding to sign for Arsenal.

Empics
Bacary Sagna is Arsenal bound.

The 24-year-old defender has signed a 'long-term' contract at the Emirates Stadium after three seasons as a regular at French club Auxerre, with Wenger's squad starting to take shape ahead of the new Premier League season.

Sagna, who was valued at around £6million, said: 'Arsene Wenger is a major reason why I have signed for Arsenal.

'He is an excellent manager with a fantastic record and I am really looking forward to working with him.'

On his departure to Barcelona, Thierry Henry stated he 'could not take the chance' of Wenger leaving the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Even with just a year left on his current deal, Wenger has never said he wants to leave Arsenal, and Sagna's arrival appears to have underlined the attraction of working with the Frenchman.

Sagna, who models himself on Lilian Thuram as a right-back who can play across the defence, also feels Arsenal can thrive wearing their new label as underdogs as the club head into the post-Henry era.

'We have youth and the fact that no-one really rates us means that maybe we can surprise people,' he added.

'The young players want to prove what they can do and I want to prove what I can do. And all of this together will help us have a good season, I hope.'

Despite Henry's departure, Sagna will have a degree of familiarity when he starts preparations for the new season.

'It is quite a French-speaking club, everybody has put me at ease right from the start and I feel good,' said Sagna, who will wear the number three shirt vacated by Ashley Cole last season.

His arrival is not expected to be the final change to Wenger's squad. Fiorentina are interested in Freddie Ljungberg, and his possible departure could push Emmanuel Eboue into midfield to accommodate Sagna at right-back.

Wenger can also play his new signing in midfield, adding: 'He is strong, quick and enjoys defending but also has a good offensive side to his game.

'He has a fighting spirit and will be a very good addition to our squad.'

Wenger has also been linked with a move for Yoan Gouffran, the 21-year-old striker who helped Caen earn promotion to the top flight of the French leagues.

Caen president Jean-Francois Fortin feels the youngster would benefit from staying in France.

'Yoan is a young player who has not played in Ligue 1 and I am convinced the best thing for him is the stage here,' he told L'Equipe.

'Unlike us, I am not sure the interested clubs could guarantee him a stage to perform like we can. If he is given just 20 minutes at the end of a match - I don't think that is very interesting for him.

'I honestly believe it is too early for him to leave.'

Bakary, welcome to Arsenal. What does it mean to you to be an Arsenal player?

It's amazing. If someone had told me that one day I would be an Arsenal player I would not have believed him. I am very happy for my family, my friends and also for my future. It is really a positive move.

Your president [at Auxerre] was quoted as saying: “He wants to wear the Arsenal shirt”. Was this club that important to you?

It's very important for me because Arsenal is one of the biggest European clubs. At the moment it a young team which still has room to improve. For a young player it is the club of the future and it is all of this which attracted me to the club.

Generally, you played at right back for Auxerre. Is that where you expect to play for Arsenal?

I think so. For four years I have been playing at right back and it is where I feel the most at ease.

But you are seen as versatile too. Where else have you played for Auxerre?

I have also played at left back on occasions, either for the Under-21 French team or in Auxerre. The result is the same.

Just so the Arsenal fans can get an impression of you, is there any player you have modelled yourself on or any hero?

Lilian Thuram.

How important was Arsène Wenger in attracting you to Arsenal?

He showed his determination when he wanted to attract me to the club when we spoke recently. The fact that he personally contacted me recently, the fact that this is such a big club and he has made so much effort to recruit me, it has seduced me.

How important in your decision was the style of football Wenger’s side plays.

I think this is one of the best English sides, the one that plays the best football. The fact that it is a young team and there is high-quality training are extra positives compared to other English teams.

In England it has been seen as a difficult time for Arsenal. How confident are you that this side can win trophies next season?

We have the youth card and the fact that no one really rates us means that maybe we can surprise people. The young players want to prove what they can do and I want to prove what I can do. And all of this together will help us have a good season, I hope.

Did you speak to anyone for advice before joining Arsenal? How about Abou Diaby, he was your team-mate at Auxerre?

Yes, Abou Diaby spoke to me the last time the French national side got together. He only had good things to say about Arsenal. And so far I am not disappointed.

Who else do you know already in the Arsenal side? You have played in the France Under-21 team with Gael Clichy haven’t you?

Yes, and Mathieu Flamini. I had a chance to meet William Gallas in the France squad and I have played against Adebayor in the French championship.

Of course, Auxerre are a team with a history of bring through big talents — Cantona, Basile Boli, Cisse , Goma, Mexes — is there something special about the way they educate their players?

I think the mentality and the training is important at Auxerre. The training is among the best in the world but I know it is easier to make it at Auxerre than somewhere else because Auxerre is a small city. We only have football to concentrate on.

How much was Guy Roux an influence on your career? He had a dynasty as Auxerre manager before he left recently.

He is enormous in France. It is him who gave me my chance. he was the one who pushed me every morning and, by the way, I would like to take this opportunity to thank him.

In 2002, Arsenal played at Auxerre in the Champions League. You were only 19 at the time and did not play but you were at the club. Do you remember the game? Did Arsenal make an impression that night?

It was one-nil to Arsenal and they were very solid that night.

Do you feel there are similarities between Wenger and Guy Roux in their approach to football?

I think so. They both prefer football which is played to the feet instead of the long ball.

Whenever a foreign player comes over to England there is an adaptation period. How easily do you think you will cope?

Straight away. I don't know why I will have problems adapting in England. It is quite a French-speaking club, everybody has put me at ease right from the start and I feel good.

What have other players told you about the pace and strength of the Premier League?

Everybody has talked about it and I have been lucky to meet the English Under-21 squad too. I saw that the level was quite high and the football was different.

Of course French players have a very good track record at Arsenal (Vieira, Petit, Henry, Clichy). Does that history make it easier for you to come here?

No, no, no. If they made it here it was because they were willing and they gave their maximum. I am going to try and imitate them.

Is this the first time you have been to Emirates Stadium? What are your first impressions?

Enormous. It is a beautiful stadium. There is nothing to add.

Finally do you have a message for the Arsenal fans?

First of all, welcome! I hope we are going to spend many seasons together.

Arsène Wenger expects to field a “very strong” side at Barnet on Saturday when Arsenal kick-off their pre-season friendlies.

The players have been returning to training in stages over the past few weeks and the names the Frenchman suggests will play at Underhill are those who came back earliest.

“It could be a very strong team at Barnet,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

“Basically the players that are back in training are available, so you could see Kolo Toure, Manuel Almunia, Gael Clichy, Mathieu Flamini, Denilson, Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor. They are all likely to be included so it should be a very familiar side.”

* Please be aware that the squads involved in pre-season friendlies are always open to change.

Arsenal2Adebayor 18, Barazite 66

By Richard Clarke

Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Nacer Barazite helped Arsenal to a comfortable 2-0 victory at Barnet on Saturday as Arsène Wenger’s side got their pre-season campaign underway.

The Emirates Stadium side controlled the game virtually from start to finish and were buoyed by goals in each half. Adebayor screwed home a shot in the 18th minute and Barazite completed the scoring just past the hour with a thunderbolt from distance.

Denilson was stretchered off in pain just before the goal but later his injury was reported to be minor.

Otherwise this was the most satisfying - and friendly - of friendlies.

Arsenal named a relatively strong side for this now traditional game against the side who play host to the Club’s Reserve fixtures. In fact, Wenger’s starting XI would not have looked out of place in the Carling Cup or even FA Cup. Kolo Toure captained the team and the front pairing, fit-again Robin van Persie and Adebayor, may well be employed when Fulham visit Emirates Stadium on August 12. Alex Song was given a run out at centre back and 17-year-old Mark Randall started on the left side of midfield.

New signing Eduardo was present but only in the stands. Debutants Havard Nordveit and Lukasz Fabianksi were named on the bench. There was also a first run-out for the new white away kit.

Barnet included a couple of former Arsenal professionals in their line-up — Nicky Nicolau and Adam Birchall. The Bees also named Richard Evans on the bench. The doctor, in his “late 40s” and from Wembley, had paid £10,000 for the privilege of coming on during that latter stages of the game.

Crowd congestion meant there was a five-minute delay to the kick-off. It did nothing to dampen the party atmosphere. However the opening stages were high on intensity yet low on chances.

Jason Puncheon looked dangerous cutting in from the Barnet left and Robin van Persie fired in a couple of pot-shots. Adebayor got the glimpse of an opening only to be denied by Ismail Yakubu. That was the sum result of the first quarter-hour.

The opening goal arrived in the 18th minute. Van Persie surprised the Barnet defence with a low corner to Walcott at the near post. He clipped a cross to the far side where Adebayor hooked home a half-volley through a crowded area. On the balance of play it was hard on the home side.

Barnet had an excellent chance to equalise two minutes later when a cute header from Liam Hatch sent Puncheon clear in the left-hand channel. Almunia was out quickly to smother the shot.

The game was opening up. Van Persie’s right-wing free-kick was nodded on by Barnet striker Liam Hatch and a sliding Adebayor just failed to convert at the far post. Then, in the 25th minute, Walcott’s deep cross was met by the head of Van Persie. The ball beat the keeper, hit the bar and bounced down but, by then, the referee had blown for offside.

Unsurprisingly given that this was the first pre-season friendly, the pace could not be maintained. Before half time, Denilson let fly from distance and Gael Clichy charged down a clearance from keeper Lee Harrison only for the ball to trickle wide.

Barnet were nearly rewarded for a half of genuine endeavour when Hatch poked a shot goalwards as Song and Almunia dithered. Again the chance came to nothing.

Arsenal made six changes at the break and Barnet made five. Often wholesale substitutions unsettle a game however in this instance they seemed to improve it. Walcott made one penetrative run in the opening minutes then Kieron Gibbs flicked wide from Adebayor’s knock back.

In the 53rd minute, Flamini clipped a perceptive ball to the Togolese striker on the edge of the area. He had plenty of time and the ball was sitting up nicely, however he dragged his shot wide.

A couple of minutes later, Denilson came off worse in a challenge with Puncheon and, after lengthy treatment, was stretchered off. Henri Lansbury replaced him. Later, it was announced over the tannoy that the injury was not serious.

Arsenal were now looking to seal the victory. Adebayor failed to connect with an inviting cross from Walcott then, in the 66th minute, Barazite doubled the advantage with a rocket shot into the far corner of the net.

There seemed little danger when the former Dutch youth international collected the ball in the right-hand channel. But his fierce drive flew into the net, leaving Harrison helpless.

The goal killed the game as a contest. Traore arrowed a shot towards the top corner but substitute keeper Dave Blackmore palmed the ball aside. In the dying minutes, the dangerous Puncheon whistled a rising drive past the angle of post and bar.

Dr Evans made his appearance late on, much to the amusement of the crowd. He seemed to enjoy his moment - as did the crowd of 5,091.
