Pieces of Arsenal folklore found at Highbury?
One of the most romantic tales in Highbury’s folkore has been given a new twist by a recent discovery by workmen currently redeveloping Arsenal’s old stadium.

Until the early 1990s, it was strongly rumoured that a horse was buried under Highbury’s North Bank Stand, with stories suggesting that a horse, together with the cart it was pulling had accidentally tumbled to its death while the foundations of the original North Bank construction were being laid in 1913.

However, no equine remains were discovered when the North Bank was redeveloped in 1992, seemingly scuppering this part of Highbury heritage. That is until now!

Further to Arsenal’s move to Emirates Stadium last summer, the development of the Club’s old stadium into Highbury Square has meant further digging has been necessary. And, deep below the surface, workmen from main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, discovered two horseshoes alongside the remains of some timber, believed to be the cart.

Pat Brennan, the workman who discovered the artefacts said: "We were digging at the north end of the site, where we are excavating for the foundations of the Highbury Square apartments and discovered what looked like two rusty old horseshoes. I took them to the site offices and one of the lads, who is an Arsenal fan, mentioned the story about the horse. It’s great to think that I may have found some items which have a place in Arsenal’s history."

Ninety per cent of apartments are now sold at the development of 711 high-spec one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, all of which will all be completed by summer 2009.

Demolition at Highbury started in August last year, with two of the four stands being completely demolished by the end of January this year. The Art Deco façades of the existing Grade II-Listed East Stand, with its famous Marble Hall, and the locally-listed West Stand remain as construction currently continues around them.

Over half a million man hours have now been completed on site since work began, and just over 800 workers will be on the development at the peak of construction. A concrete batching plant has been constructed at the centre of the former pitch, 145,000 m3 of material has been excavated and approximately 14,000m3 of concrete has been poured.

wah lau - like dat ...I wouldnt ever wanna set foot on OT turf man...YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCHHKKKK! :x

The guys at ARSEnal knew that the horses had evidence of their dirty acts, that's why they were buried in there.

if wenger leaves, i can safely say the likes of fabregas and toure will follow suite. maybe henry was also disappointed in wenger for not showing much ambition in the transfer market. look at man utd, 50million pounds on good prospects - that shows ambition. look at chelsea, yea sure mourinho might not have spent a penny but wth claudio pizarro and tal ben-haim?! i wouldnt say both pizarro and ben-haim are world-class but they're first-team regulars for their respective countries. i'm a man utd fan and have been since i was primary 4, and i would rather have pizarro and ben-haim than saha and o'shea.

look at arsenal, who did they buy? a swedish youngster. sure he's a great young prospect but i dont really see how that would build up the team for next season.

i dont even need to talk about liverpool, whole load of bollocks about buying this and that but i dont see anything man. NATO.

tottenham is by far the WORSE. with the cash jol has spent in the past season, it's amazing how he hasnt achieved anything with tottenham.

no offence to any football fans though. just expressing my opinions, please correct me if i've said anything wrong.

henry leaving to barca has already been confirmed by the arsenal website.Pending medical thats all.

It seems that henry left cause wenger wouldnt commit himself as manager after 2008 when his own contract expires.

That fact, plus dein's departure influenced his decision to leave Arsenal as he said he can't imagine being managed by anyone else but them.

Henry also thanks and says that he will miss the fans of arsenal the most as they have stood by him "through thick and thin".

To me, that is an absolute load of bollocks. But from this, I can deduce that...

Wenger may also be heading to Barca

If wenger leaves, Fabregras and the rest will definitely follow.

He would rather be managed by Rikhard in a foreign environment with a strong galatico policy with team-mates with far bigger egos than him, rather than stay at the club that gave him everything he has now.Not forgetting that he is the highest paid player in Arsenal's history, even trying to appease his demands of signing world class players etc, and that he was given the captain's armband .Even when he was injured during most of the season, the club and fans still adored him and the club was still trying their means to hold on to him.

Henry is by far the worst captain arsenal ever had, and his departure will affect a lot of players in the morale department, after all that Arsenal has done for him.

He will always be a legend and we thank him for all the memories, but I would rather appreciate a real legend like DB10 dennis bergkamp who stayed till the end.Now that is "through thick and thin" :(

Henry's thanking the fans for staying by him through thick and thin, not the other way around, lol...
