Wenger vows to rotate his side for Blackburn Cup tie
Arsenal v Blackburn Rovers
FA Cup Round 5
Emirates Stadium
Sat, Feb 17, 2007, 12.30pm

By Richard Clarke

Arsene Wenger has vowed to rotate his side “as much he can” for the visit of Blackburn in the FA Cup Fifth Round on Saturday.

The Arsenal manager omitted Jens Lehmann, Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas for the Fourth Round replay at Bolton on Wednesday night yet still went through with a wonderful 3-1 win after extra time.

Next week, the Frenchman takes his team back into European competition and to Cardiff for the Carling Cup Final. Therefore it is no surprise to see him shuffling his pack on Saturday.

“I will rotate as much as I can,” Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday. “I rested a few players at Bolton and some of them will come in.

“I am rotating for two reasons. Firstly we played extra time up there and the space is very short between Wednesday night and Saturday morning. Secondly we have a massive game on Tuesday night [at PSV].

“But what the Carling Cup has taught us is that we can rotate now. They are all up to the level and that is fantastic information for the Club.”

Johan Djourou picked up a knee injury at Bolton and will be out in the short-term. Alex Hleb has a hamstring niggle but Philippe Senderos will be available after suspension.

“Djourou will be out,” said Wenger. “He has a knee problem. But he will not be out for a longer period maybe only two or three days.

“Alex Hleb has a tight hamstring. I played him for longer than I wanted to last night. He may need a little rest but it should not be a problem for Tuesday’s game. I will decide about that on Friday.”

Arsenal TV Online will have the full interview with Arsène Wenger on Friday morning. In it the Frenchman discusses: the win at Bolton, the emergence of Denilson, finally winning at Bolton, the 6-2 win over Blackburn in December and the new faces in the Rovers side.

Bellamy and Riise: 'It was our destiny'

Liverpool hero Craig Bellamy admitted he was 'gob-smacked' after the Reds overcame a turbulent week to defeat champions Barcelona in their Champions League last-16 first leg at the Nou Camp.

Empics
Liverpool had suffered the early setback of a Deco strike.Deco had given Barca a 14th-minute lead when he headed home Gianluca Zambrotta's cross, but Liverpool hit back to stun the reigning champions.

Bellamy headed in Liverpool's equaliser just before the break before the Welshman set up John Arne Riise to power home the Reds' winner 16 minutes from time.

Reports suggested last weekend that Bellamy and Riise fell out at a training camp but Bellamy said: 'It doesn't bother me, I just try to get on with things.

'Today it was a great result but it's only half-time and at Anfield, it will be a completely different game.

'As good as the result is, there is still a long way to go,' he told Sky Sports 1.

'I'm still gob-smacked. Just coming to the Nou Camp today was unreal. It's my boy's 10th birthday today so it's special.

'There has been no problem (in the squad), we've trained all week. We all know how strict the gaffer is; if there was a big problem, I wouldn't be here.'

Riise confirmed that there was no ill-feeling between himself and the Wales striker.

He said: 'It was destiny for both of us I think. Both Bellamy and myself have had a difficult run-up [to the game] but we've put it behind us.

'The team is happy. We're going to enjoy this. We put this [training camp incident] behind us very early and we worked hard for the team and we'll move forward.'

The Norwegian full-back also praised manager Rafael Benitez for masterminding a famous win for the Reds.

'The boss, tactically, is one of the best around.

'It's a big lead to take [to Anfield] but we know they can score away from home. But we won this game and if we don't lose at home we are through.'

Benitez said: 'The atmosphere between the players has been very good, and you can see today how they worked hard for the team and the supporters.'

'I am very pleased for Bellamy to score his goal and also pleased for the team,'' he added.

'When we can win here at the Nou Camp, I am very happy.

'But at the end of the day, we have got to play another game.'

LIVERPOOL FOR THE CHAMPION'S LEAGUE TITLE!!!!!

Barcelona 1-2 Liverpool: Bad boys on targetPA

BARCELONA, February 21 (Champions League) - Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise both got on the scoresheet as Liverpool put a traumatic week behind them to claim a stunning Champions League victory over Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Ronaldinho and Barcelona's other stars failed to shine. Bellamy and Riise were allegedly the two players involved in last week's training ground fracas in Portugal - and tonight's response from the pair will have delighted coach Rafael Benitez and the mass of travelling Liverpool fans.

In the battle between the last two winners of the competition, 2005 champions Liverpool tonight became only the second English team to beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

The only previous side to win here was the 1975-76 Liverpool team, which downed Barca 1-0 in the UEFA Cup semi-finals before going on to win the final.

Liverpool, who had not lost in three previous visits to the Nou Camp, made a confident start, and they should possibly have taken the lead after creating the first incisive move of the match in the fourth minute.

However, Riise, having broken the offside trap to latch onto Steven Gerrard's pass, could not find Bellamy in the middle, when a decent pass would surely have led to the Welshman putting Liverpool ahead.

After a quiet start, the home side and their fans were finally woken up when Ronaldinho went sprawling in the box, only for the referee to wave play on.

Deco then tried his luck before Juliano Belletti blazed high and wide, before Barca took the lead in the 14th minute when Gianluca Zambrotta crossed to the far post where the diminutive Deco headed into the corner of the net.

Saviola had a chance to make it 2-0 just minutes later after skipping past Jamie Carragher, but the Argentinian's left-footed shot went wide.

Barca were rampant at this stage, and Reina was forced to come out and deny Deco following a neat pass from Lionel Messi.

With Rafael Benitez's side clearly shell-shocked, Barca continued to push forward and only some desperate Liverpool defending kept the Spanish champions from increasing their lead.

Liverpool managed to regroup - and they had a chance to draw level seven minutes before the break after earning a free-kick out wide on the left. However, the unmarked Bellamy could only head Gerrard's cross into the side-netting.

Bellamy made amends for that miss in the 43rd minute though as Liverpool drew level.

Steve Finnan dinked a ball into the box and Bellamy powered in a header which Victor Valdes was unable to keep hold of, with Dirk Kuyt pouncing to slot the ball home.

Bellamy's header had already crossed the line before Valdes pushed it back out though, and the striker celebrated his goal by imitating a golf-swing.

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard then opted to make a change at the start of the second half, with Thiago Motta replaced by Spain international Andres Iniesta, much to the delight of the home fans.

But even with the highly-rated Iniesta on the pitch, Barca were still struggling to re-establish their early dominance and Rijkaard made his second switch in the 65th minute, sending on Ludovic Giuly for Xavi Hernandez.

Liverpool were gifted a chance to take the lead when Valdes picked up a back-pass from Giuly.

Gerrard saw his shot saved by the feet of Valdes, but Liverpool really should have netted when the ball came back into the box, with Kuyt unable to head home from just three yards out.

That let-off seemed to spark Barca into life briefly and they fashioned their best chance of the second half soon afterwards.

Saviola created some space for a shot inside the Liverpool penalty area, but he was denied by Reina. The rebound fell for Messi - but he saw his shot deflected over.

Liverpool scored their second goal in the 74th minute, after Gerrard picked out Kuyt with a brilliant pass.

Although the Dutchman was denied by Reina, Bellamy played the loose ball across goal for the unmarked Riise to blast right-footed into the roof of the net.

With their title defence beginning to slip away, Barca piled forward after that in search of an equaliser, but poor control from Saviola saw one decent chance go begging.

With five minutes to go Reina flapped at a cross to leave Liverpool fans with their hearts in their mouths, but he was saved by his covering defence.

A similar misjudgement from Reina minutes later almost cost his side a goal though, and he will have been hugely relieved to see Deco's curling free-kick hit his far post and rebound away to safety.

That was the closest Barca would come to an equaliser however, and they now face an uphill battle in the second leg at Anfield.
