heh, sometime over the years, thing can changed.

Just about ten or so years earlier, before some geetars manufacturing plant are being shifted to china, people actually doesnt really like korean made geetars. It was seem like 2nd class instrument, for some and forums discussion etc.

Fastforward to this decade, suddenly mik geetars seem to be sought after. Heh, Its a strange world.

ten years later, when production cost getting insane in china and big coporate shift their plant to another place, MIC geetars will be the next majik instrument.

^starting to happen now with with MII guitars popping up I think. we all are prejudiced against stuff that comes from somewhere near home.

I had a Korean made Epi strat signature edition les paul some 8 years back, very nice looking actually. The electronics were iffy, the switch was flaky and the pots scratchy. The sound was sub-average and there was microphonic squeal from the pickups when the gain was high. I most definitely didn't pay more than $800 for it at swee lee. Even though it was Korean made, the quality left a lot to be desired.

For single cuts under 2k you'll prob do better trying other brands than epi's. Try edwards lp, esp eclipse, tokai lp, prs se, parker pm20. More likely you'll have an easier and faster time finding the gem within the pile. Granted you konw what you are looking for in the first place.

Since im in a gd mood today, some rules of choosing guitars.

RULE
1: Avoid guitars that are badly setup. Although can be argued that u can send it for set
up later. Bad set ups can hide flaws. Eg: guitars that need to have its frets levelled or improperly cut nut.

2: Instead of trying to solo when trying the guitar, play every note on the fretboard to check dead notes or buzzing when amplified.

3: play the guitar clean while strumming simple chords to check whether tone is to your liking then distorted. Get the guitar only if u like the stock tone. Not exactly a gd idea to just get the guitar thinking that u can just change the pickups later unless u are very sure that itll give you exactly what you want. Switching pickups can only do so much.

4: just run a scale quickly in various positions on the fretboard to check whether you're comfortable with the guitar's neck.

5: Remember to have fun:-)

I don't have anything against MIC products considering my computer, and a whole lot of electronics originated there.

Real life experience here.

I purchased a MIC Epi a few years back. The finish was decent and the sound was ok for stock pickups but the fret work was terrible. A refret was not an economical option.

My advice if you want to get MIC Epis is to really sit down and test it very carefully and if you are not experienced in testing for the more critical aspects, please get a friend who does.

I was in quite a shock when I went down to look at the Archtop Models.
Joe Pass Emperor, Lucille, Dots,

All Made in China, I wouldnt comment about the pricing though, but the workmanship really turns me off.

Imagine the Volume/Tone Knobs were like done in a secondary school technical class plastic lesson..!!

Finishing was so-so and I think i spotted dust in the paint work.

This move by the Gib company to aqquire Epi is actually cover the market base. Just like Rolex and Swatch.
However, if theres a quality problem and Gib is not going to excercise restraint, end of the day, Gib company's effort will be affected.

The same goes for the Ibanez Artcore series which I had compared.
Finishing and workmanship were great!
It just lack the Ibanez sound.....
Not bright enough..sustain not long enough....

If I have the money, I will still go for ESP Eclipse at SGD1650.00

Trying is not enough

Hey all young guitarists. Trying a guitar for an hour at any shop will not conclude if the guitar is worth buying. Some guitars may sound good but a good guitar is not only based on the sound itself.A good guitar is a guitar with the followings:
1) A guitar must stay intune. Some guitars no matter what you do they go out of tune easily.
2) Good intonation. Some guitars you cannot have a good intonation and cannot be adjusted.
3) The neck must be straight and make sure the truss rod can help. Many guitars with necks which cannot be adjusted to straight. This is because the neck is not made straight. And you have to have a high action inorder for the guitar to sound reasonably good. You can bring them to the best repairer, they can only help to improve.
4) Hardwares have to be reliable.
Therefore guys you will never know if a guitar is good till you start playing with it for at least a week.I have been playing guitars for more than 25 years and till today I still come across guitars which cost more than $1000 sucks.Sometimes buying a guitar depends on luck. Finally you need to be a good guitarist to know if the guitar is good or not.

I guess getting an MIK guitar is still a better bet. Provided u can find it brand new. No matter how good the quality is, it's proven that MIK guitar tend to get easily sold in 2nd hand market than the MIC one
