Entry Gibson LP

Hi all
Can anyone advise .
I am looking for an entry level Gibson LP for my son's birthday . He plays a broadbase genre of songs on his acoustic guitar & I feel it would be interesting for him to explore the difference with an electric guitar.

Whats your budget? Gibsons are generally not cheap so if you're looking for entry level price I'm afraid you're not gona get it. Theres a Les Paul Jr Special around here, those are the cheaper gibsons (Slightly over 1k)

Yes , I understanding the pricing of Gibson LPs , not cheap. Bugetwise below 2k , best bang for the money . Am actually considering the LP Studio 60s Tribute with P90s..

I see, 2k should be enough to get a decent Gibson. The one edgie is selling? I've played that one before.. Its a good guitar and hes selling cheap too. The P90s can cover quite a range of genres and tones too.

You got it. I can't think of a better entry-level Gibson to recommend.

hmmm just in case, would your son be able to handle the LP's weight? for a young boy it might be quite overwhelming..

anyway if you're ok with second hands, you can check out the buy/sell section i think the previous week i saw standards going at 2k

Thank You guys for your comments . He is a tough lad , just wanted to get him a decent LP to get started with & one that he can grow from , till he buy better ones on his own.

Btw , any decent amps to recommend ?

I'd suggest a small wattage tube amp.

For cleans - Vox AC4TV, one of the best around in this price range!

If he needs a dual channel amp, the blackstar amps (HT5 series) are pretty good and versatile.

Also, the Marshall class 5 combo is another viable alternative.

Any idea what bands he listens to/plays?

Yes tributes are chambered. Very light when I carried with, with a good strap it should be no problem at all. The Jet City amps are good, Davis sells them pretty cheap. Nice 2 channel amp for less than 500. If you get the tribute and the vox ac4/ jet city etc you'll not even hit the 2k mark.

The usual Top 40 Billboards bands , Linkin Park , One Republic etc..quite broadbase but not Metal...I leave it to him to explore.
These amps , where can I get them and indicative price point if it's alright to mention them here .

wck, didnt know the that davis carried Jet city!

ahh okay, then he needs a dual channel amp unless he has a distortion pedal.

I'd recommend either the jet city amps of the blackstar HT5 then.

Both are available at peninsula plaza basement. Jet city amps at davis and sound alchemy, blackstar amps at woodwerkz

The vox ac4tv runs about 300 at city music (peace centre) jet city amps and blackstar are mostly in the 4-500 range.

one important thing to note about gibsons.. If you're like me, I'm pretty picky about neck shape and size. Generally there are two sizes of necks, 50s rounded and 60s slim taper, i personally prefer the 60s slim taper neck, with the exception of one 50s rounded neck which i found amazingly comfortable to play with (on a 90s Gibby studio). Best to try both out to see what he wants.

Neither did I haha.. Just found out about a month ago, their prices are pretty crazy. Much more worth it than the blackstar IMO. 50W head is around 400 I believe. You can go for the smaller combos but they sell out pretty quickly.

About the neck shape, from what I remember the tribute felt like a 60s slim taper.

Hi,
I'd just like to correct the comment that the Tribute series are beginner guitars. It's a very gig-worthy guitar and is much nicely set-up than most beginner guitars. It just so happened to be cheap because of less ornaments on it. Gibson's beginner guitars are the cheap Epiphones. Even the current regular production Les Paul Jr/Melody Maker, which are actually designed for students, are considered as intermediate guitars already. : )

Generally, a combo would be slightly cheaper than head + cab.. If its just to be put at home then combo will do fine. Nothing to do with combos are for starters etc.

Edgie: Didn't mean to say its a beginner guitar. Its definitely a great guitar for the price and way better than epiphones haha.

imho, the gibson tributes will beat most epiphones. except maybe the older MIJ ones or elitist models.

they go for a great price and are definitely worth the $, as per wck's recommendation, getting a combo is cheaper usually and well easier to carry around too

hehe. was referring to Cyanide Junkie's post though I think the OP's term should be intermediate instead of entry-level since he said his son is already playing acoustic quite well. Man, I wish I had 2k when I was still starting out on the electric. haha.: )
