alright, here's the mix i promised a few weeks ago. it's a Sepultura cover, Slave New World that a friend and i did for fun. thought i'd start a new topic because the previous one was a little messy, and its not like theres a mass of new threads in this forum anyway...

i'll post up the full recording chain and some mix techniques later if anyone's interested.

comments and feedback are most welcome, i think the low end might be slightly overbearing, probably due to my mix environment and penchant for massive kick drums ;)

overall good stuff, but for this genre i would have preferred the guitars heavier sounding. sounds like you ran it through the line6 podxt pro (you got a mesa triple rect right?) and the "oomph" isn't cutting through as well as the growls of the vocalist / kickdrum.

just wondering how come you run nice heavy reverb/delay/efx for the vox but you don't apply it to the snare.. needs more (i feel) "ring"/snare tail. that big impact-y feeling.

lead/solo guitars at the last part would have just wanted it jacked up a little louder then should be okay.

bass just needs abit louder in my opinion.

cymbals/toms/kick/vox are definitely good to go.

good performance/production in general for a "for fun" song. heheh

50¢ worth.

ahh sorry for the late reply been a hectic week.

heh you nailed it on the guitar tone, its a modeller. we recorded this in melbourne, didn't have any of my amps with me. i've got a recto recording pre though, not a triple rect heh.

drums - utter shite, beat to hell basix kit.

kick - beta 52 and yamaha subkick - 52 was obviously replaced with samples, but the subkick track sounded great. heavily gated/eq'd and mixed in for the low end oomph.
snare - 57 - replaced - shit snare.
toms - MD421s and a D112 egg on the floor tom - these sounded MONEY despite the terrible drums, but way too much china bleed on the tracks, i grudgingly replaced them..a real waste.
overheads - rode nt5s, spaced pair. - spent the most time on these and pretty happy with the way they turned out, even though it was recorded in a pretty small and dead room.

drums all went through the pre's in a control 24, goddamn i hate those.

guitars - johnson j-station on the recto model, cab sims bypassed and running through a palmer PDI-09 DI/cab sim. you can still tell its a modeller, but the palmer is definately a vast improvement over the inbuilt cab sims. oh and the wah on the solo is actually a plugin, with my drummer using the mouse to drag a slider onscreen while i played hahaa.

bass - borrowed warwick fortress into a sansamp DI. definately needs to be louder like you said..my bad here.

vox - good old SM58 into a m-audio DMP3 pre. handheld,no pop shield, monitors cranked and going for it like i was onstage. 3 takes all the way through and comp'd from there. im really stoked with the vocal sound and performance..

acck. more to come later if anyones interested.

what's a beat to hell basix kit?? triggers?

yeah overall it's cool for the vox. i always felt dynamic mics works quite alright for growl/screamos instead of condensers.

keep em coming heheh.

oh basix is just the brand of the crap drumkit kicking around the studio.. horribly worn heads, lugs that wont hold tune for more than a minute.. been trying to get out of using samples but with kits like that..sigh
