Technically the long neck tenon is a better joint. There's probably not much sense in arguing that out. However, I wouldn't choose between two guitars just based on that. Could very well be that the guitar with the short tenon is a better guitar. But apples to apples, the specific short tenon approach versus long tenon - I'd choose long tenon...if I have the moolah..hehehe

this is entirely my own personal opinion...

I wonder if short tenon got anything to do with cost savings by manufacturers. I mean how much is that extra stump of wood gonna costs? Sheesh!

If it's budget guitars (eg. TGM, J&D), maybe understandable. But currently, Gibson is using short tenon for its non-custom shop LPs. And each Gibson LP is priced around SGD2500-SGD4000 (twice that if it's coming from Swee Lee!). I'm sure that extra 1-inch stump don't cost so much?

You really think Gibson gives you top notch quality? Have you seen their regular tops?

Honestly, I dunno if the tenon length is a cost saving measure or not. I think it's more an effort issue, and probably some compromise for a manufacturing process.

strange though, everyone's always complaining about the service Davis has.. when i first went into the shop more than a year ago to test the Edwards LP, they were more than glad to let me and my friend doodle around on it.. needless to say i went back the next day to doodle around somemore before purchasing it.. they were also quite helpful with bringing in my CY-165.. no complaints about their service there..
