Drummers (Double pedals = pro?)

Hmm.

Suddenly felt like writing this

Are drummers considered noob if they can't double pedal, or don't like to. I'm a drummer myself. I haven't really tried double pedaling before, coz the kits i've played on so far are all single pedal.

One at ebenex, the other one my school kit.

I see alot ppl, when looking for drummers for their band, will put a, must be a double pedal. I get kind of upset when I see stuff like this.

I read this somewhere before, or heard from some drummer. I can't remember. Wait, I think i read it in an interview in Modern Drummer. He said, the bigger your kit, the less creative you are.

Hmm. What do you guys think of this issue

Well, I personally think this is a very sad way of thinking. if you can double pedal, you're fast, but if you can heel-toe on a single pedal, as fast as a double pedaller, now that's what I call skill. Most bands ask for double pedallers probably because they play power-metal/thrash metal, which requires extreme bass bashing, take tre cool for an example, he plays pop-punk, and some of their songs are fast, but he doesn't need a double bass.

To the article on Modern Drummer. The bigger the kit the less creative you are, this does not apply to everyone. You can have a small kit, and make probably a small range of sounds (in terms of creativity) There's no difference. But if you have a small kit, but can make as many sounds as a man with a big kit can, then yes, you are very creative. Be creative, think outside of the box. Well these are just my opinions, not everyone has the same one as me. :P

Cheers,
WWH

Hmm.

Those people are probably playing in a metal band, or some kind of genre that needs double pedaling.

i think....

this thread is in the wrong forum :)

but dont you think double pedalling is more persistent to the genre played? i mean rock and heavy/death/thrash/etc metal all NEED double pedalling. get my drift?

so amybe the bands you were hoping to join were more towards the heavier stuff?
dunno

cheers

I think that double pedals may be essential to the kind of songs they play. Without it, I think it's like losing something. Perhaps it's the power. But if I'm looking for a drummer and I'm playing that kind of stuffs and you can play single pedal as fast as double pedal, I will still take you in.

Doesn't matter one la.. you good means you good.
Tony Royster Jr. pwns with his double pedal even though he doesn't do metal.

Paradiddle with your double pedals :D

I agree witht the Modern drummer quote...

it's harder to fill with smaller kits, takes more creativity to pump something good out.

but there's also a limit i feel. eg, i don't think ringo starr was any more creative than say chad smith, or dominic howard, even though his kit was comparitively smaller.

just my 2cents, i think mike portnoy sounds much better, lively and alive on a smaller kit (played with a beatles tribute band - yellow matter custard) than on his normal monster. very technical, very boring. to me.

if anyone thinks that non-doublepedal = noob, he/she is completely retarded. As stated by many above, those bands u speak about are probably very heavy bands.

About the quote, i know this sounds ironic and cheesy but i agree yet disagree. haha. drummers will probably get what i mean, lazy to explain.

for me, a good drummer doesn't have to be good in double pad. they just need to hav skill of improvising with wat they got n make use every each of them if possible example travis barker???. even if u can double pad as drdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrrd at very fast n constant, i won't say u r good, mayb 'ok'. a good double pad drummer for me is kinda like know how to use their double pad as a rythem. example joey and travis smith???

PEACE NO WAR!!!!!!!!!

Bullshit lah..haha some genres no need double pedals what. Depends on what u want to play. Wanna play metal? Learn em double peds...dowant to play? also learn lah...no harm knowing more

^true enough.
And conclusion, double pedal does not equal to good. You still need creativity to be a good drummer and in overall, a musician.
Great example would be Dave Grohl, this dude never uses double pedals..but just watch videos of him drumming from Nirvana era till Foo Fighters/Qotsa period. He's good.

Another would be Buddy Rich. 'Nuff said.

All in all, there's no such thing as a single skill that will make you "good".

yup certain genres do require double-pedaling.

Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden uses a single pedal.
John Bonham from Led Zeppelin, did too.
And so do I.

i'd say double-pedaling is a plus, not a need. somehow i see double-pedaling and doing, say stick tricks, in the same light. it's kinda there to wow the crowd, to showboat. but that's my interpretation of double-pedaling. it'd sure as hell be a nice addition to your repertoire.

i have a pair of double pedals but they're rarely used because the material i play dont require double-pedaling. i do intend to explore and go further into it though, but only when i become more than decent at the stuff i'm doing now.

heard of the saying "Jack of all trades, but master of none"? no point being able to doing a bit of everything, but not being good at any one of them. if you wanna double-pedal, make sure you practise like hell until your BD rudiments are there and your beats are equally played, if not drummers who listen to you will just go "WTF".

you dont have to double pedal to be great, period.

he considers it to be "too complicated", and "un-drummerish". Instead, he has developed a very fast technique using just one bass drum. - Nicko McBrain

so yeah, it's really up to the individual itself. :)

like everyones been saying...different bands require different drummers.
I think one of the best drummers with a single pedal is John Bonham.
if you are playing a simple 16 beat on double pedals more half the time then i would say u are an ok-ish drummer...i like drummers who are creative with their footwork eg; Chris Adler from LOG or Tomas Haake from Meshuggah.

double pedal is good la when it fits the music.
but to me, its more on how creative the drummer is and how he/she kips the tempo constant.

i saw a few drummers who can double pedal, play off beat bla bla bla...
kits set up like shielding away from a bomb bla bla...
but timing like fcUk.
wats the point rite...

i personally think what makes a drummer good is his creativity. not so much double pedals because one may not be keen to play songs which require double pedals so double pedalling may be secondary...

Woah. This sparked off so many comments

Nope, I did not tryout for any bands. Just that i saw a band looking for drummer and he said must double pedal.

Hmm thanks for all those who commented here though.
