Drum Attack

Hello all!
In regards to my subject above, i have been wondering what it means by a drum attack? Does changing heads affect the drum attack if a particular drum has only a batter head?
Or rather how would a drum sound be like with and without a resonant head. Weak? Etc. =)

Having said that, im now terribly reconsidering about the pearl rhythm traveler as im more of a modern rock/ metal player. But then again i have space and noise constraints. Hmm decisions decisions....
Anyone with any tips?
