double bass question

Hi guys, i just got an old pair of double pedals from a fren, and just started to practice on it. I'm trying to learn heel down first, after reading from so many of the previous posts.

But sometimes when i practice heel down, both legs just go at the same time, izzit lack of practice?

Would doing heel down practice on train/bus etc help?

Last time i tried to double pedal heel up on the floor, doesn't seem to help at all. As in when i didn't have any pedals to practice with. why ah?

Sorry for having so many questions. Need help from all the Soft drummers. Thank you. :)

IMO practicing alternate legs on 16th notes even without the pedals do help.
They train on your alternate leg muscle memory and endurance.

I think its good to learn both heels up and heel down, as both has it pros and cons. Other drummers can give u more info on that i am still not good XD

for myself i have a double bass question here too. What are the double bass footing for this beat at a tempo 120? I know it could be played with a single bass, but for long period of time and for more comfort reasons for me :D

thanks guys!

you know, they say your left leg is really as gd as your right... it's just the pedals that are causing all the problem..

from personal experience, playing heel down in the on MRT trains help a lot... hahah:)

play heel up though, because from there one can use the heel toe technique, equivalent to double strokes on the hand...

after i got the heel toe technique, my double bass drumming technique was quite stable... so yup i suggest going do double strokes on the bass drum..

all the best!:D

just sit and practise on them for about an hour everyday.

start slow and try to use your whole legs, even your hips to control the strokes. get your legs used to the alternating motion. make sure your groins ache bad after every practise session. you'd be working out your hip flexors

for me, when i was first starting out, i played heel up but i would stomp my heel onto the heel plate of the pedals. so as to built up my strength and control. i would only do heel down when im in the bus or mrt, tapping my feet along to songs..

it takes time bro

thanks bros! thats a lot of info. Oh btw, how to do heel toe? I'm not very sure about that. So sorry

i'd suggest sticking to what i told you earlier. it worked for me, im sure it'll somehow work with anyone else. im not sure but i think this is called the flatfoot technique. i find this technique easier to develop independence with the hands, as youre kinda "stomping your feet" onto the pedals, and you dont have to worry about keeping it constant. but dont stomp too hard. you dont wanna be breaking your pedals while jamming

heel toe is a totally different dimension altogether.. i just find it darn confusing. but no harm trying..

you know what bro? start slow... super slow. it hurts, its boring, its irritating but it'll pay off.

yeah bro chud. practiced for like 1 1/2 hrs today on a metronome. i practiced both heel up and heel down. my muscle was aching so bad i wanted to try again few hours later cannot do for long.

And it gets really irritating when both your legs sometimes just don't know why just goes together at the same time and not alternating.

I guess alot of people get this problem too right?

But i'll perservere.

And thanks alot btw! :D :D

yup the legs not alternating is a common problem. but go slow man.. you'll get it in time. i once wanted to give up learning. but i stuck with my so called "foot stomping" technique and it worked... over some time.

good luck bro.

keep it heavy! trash till death!

my humble 2 cents: it would be useful to play double pedals while making sure that the hands hit at the exact same instant so that it doesn't sound sloppy.

ie: no matter how fast your legs go alternate and sounding even, it would still sound bad if the hands aren't played tight with the bass pedal.

Those who wants to learn more abt Dbl Bass drumming can approach brother Vio!! He's a dbl bass MONSTER!!! :P

Haha, i guess there's always a devil in everyone telling you -GIVE UP NOW-

Bro Vio, you mean when i step the right leg, i hit with the right hand also, and do the same thing with the left also?

Oh yah another question, because i'm not playing with a drumset at home now, i put my pedals against a cardboard box and practice it, however its at a corner, would the width between the 2 legs affect anything?

Eg. Normal length btw left leg to right leg is about 70cm when with a drumset.

At home - Btw left leg and right leg is only 50 cm.

Would it make my practice wrong? or anything?

Hi there Rengaw,

As for the basic rules playing dbl bass drumming, one must start very slow.

U gotta learn how to walk before U can run. Get what I mean?

Start slow.. and i mean very slow. Snail pace slow!

Most of the time when u play drums, U'll be playing the right leg more often than the left leg and u'll need to exercise the left leg in order for U to play dbl bass more efficiently.

Its advisable to play along with songs that has dbl bass drumming so as to familiar with the patterns and fills.

Hope this helps.

rengaw: use pillows. you'll develop control and endurance if u use pillows. thats what i always do at home.. its much more tiring that way. but it'll help when ur behind a kit

eh shred5 dun talk nonsense!

rengaw: yes hit with your right hand and left hand at exactly the same time as your right leg. it's not about how fast can double bass, but how tight and spot on it can sound.

Shred5 : Yeap bro, i know what you mean. =) Thanks so much for the wonderful advice.

Chud : Alright man, i'll change to using pillows instead now.

Vio : Yeah, i will take your -heavenly- (as the other SOFTies said) advice.

Frummer : Bro Vio must be really awesome, anyone has videos of him playing? Can let the newbies learn a thing or two.

Saw a video of -ahpek- trying a drumset(playing) on youtube. he's awesome man!

Oh yah, can help me on the question whereby whether the diff btw the length btw left and the right leg would make any differences?

i guess if u spread them apart more, youre' probably gonna stress your hip flexors more..

i suggest just keeping them shoulder width apart
