hey peeps..i just started playing bass last Friday and i already started playin seven nation army and now, im learnin new born by muse..my question is, is it tooo early for me to be playing songs like the above or is it okay for me to just keep on practising? haha..dono leh..

just play what u wanna play first. newborn and 7 nation army or what songs u like. then slowly work your way up.
the only painful thing is when u lose interest and stop playing altogether.

hey,get it slow .i bet you cant really follow the real tempo of newborn yeah?.
well..whatever drives you to really learn newborn is that, maybe you have that hard passion for it.
just like victor wooten said,play with your heart,do what you love and achieve what you can/will achieve.
maybe you can start on playing coldplay or maybe try playing b182. lol i know its freakingly funny to try b182.. but then,it helps your strumming, or if you love plucking,then try iron maiden..songs like hallowed be thy name by iron maiden is fairly easy..
try exposing yourself to many diff genres of songs.metal,death,punk,ska,almost anything.even blues jazz . you would need to expose yourself to many songs.
practice practice practice.. you needa get to know your bass.. you will somehow get your fingers accepting the bass,ya know,when it runs up and down the neck and note whoring every single one .. well yeah.. spend time with your bass like as if its some ferrari and practice practice practice...if you're really into music that is..
and please do keep in mind..exlpore music!

music is beautiful which knows no boundaries..

one more thing, if you really really can't play that type of music piece about 90% correct even after 3 hours of practising, LEAVE..dont worry,your fingers prob needs the rest and most of the time,(well through my experience) you can nail that very same music piece the next day. e.g you will be doing much more better than the day before..

my advice is dun learn theory first. since u juz pick up, haf fun first. learn watever songs u wan. of course try n keep ur rhytm, dun juz hantam. speaking based on experience, learning theory when u juz pick up instrument will make u get sick and uninterested anymore.
also do finger exercises. this very important. spend like 10-15 mins doing chromatics. in fact u can even practice anytime anywhere. my bassist trains his right fingers by tapping them on the table. like alternately tapping the index and middle finger, get wat i trying to say? according to him it works lah. so give it a shot.
so yeah basically learn watever u wana play and HAF FUN!

i dont think theory would be much important.
if you can already fly a Raptor, would you still need a book 'Flying for Dummies?'.
the point is, self-taught is the key .
it's pointless to learn theory first.
it's just like going back to school.. bass playing should be all fun fun fun .. not mug mug mug and trying to learn what does that bloody score sounds like..
get to know your bass first. if you're interested then get into theory. please do not jump into theory head on as 90% after theory, you might get sick of it.
music needs discipline and loads of determination if you would want to be a good musician, and of course the right attitude. but i guess you will only back out if only you could see the true music 'backstages'.

it is possible to develop foundation without formal learning, and it is possible to write your own songs from sheer practice and determination.
but theory definitely helps.
there are musicians/performers who have never learnt an ounce of theory who are out there writing and playing great songs and gigs, and there are musicians who could write books on theory but accomplish nothing. There are also musicians who have the benefit of both sides; which is a no-lose situation.
It's about finding a balance that works for you.
