Positive attitude. Dom Famularo is a walking goldmine of expertise when it comes to learning the drums, which he stresses, is an art. But if there is only one thing that sticks – it’s his rock solid attitude and positivism.
I met up with Dom for breakfast last Sunday to conduct this interview. Eight hours later, this camera-shy writer was being filmed in dialogue with Dom, thanks to his motivation to ‘always do one better’.
As the Education Director for Sabian Ltd, Vic Firth Inc and Mapex Drums, his greatest responsibilities are to connect teachers with companies worldwide. On top of that, he aims to raise the standard of teaching globally and make educational material as accessible as possible. “When traveling, I get to know what is needed, so I can then conceptualize instructional books targeting those needs,” he explains.
It is essentially his extensive traveling that has earned him his other title – “Drumming’s Global Ambassador”. Now being the world’s representative of the instrument, this art with possibly the longest history known to man is not to be taken lightly.
Yet his mission extends to any musician and the man in the street.
The essence of his mission – to “inspire to aspire”, was epitomized by his response to my last question of the hour long interview. It is the only response that is published here, as he has reiterated everything else at the Young Musician’s Society’s clinic that was held the following day.
Like his studies of practical, liberating techniques, Dom’s philosophies are readily available on the Internet, and you could read or listen to them anytime.
Here is something exclusively for you, an excerpt of Dom’s priceless wisdom for Singapore’s aspiring musicians on soft.com.sg.
“First, it really is an honor to return to Singapore, I have tremendous respect for the people and the country and in all of my trips here, I have met some wonderful musicians,”
“There is great talent here, and I would love to see it blossom like a beautiful flower. But like the flower needs sunlight, air and water, talent requires passion, knowledge, and dedication. If this next generation can take on the food of music, they will grow to express themselves and their music could change the world for the better.”
“When a civilization dies and archaeologists dig it up, they decipher its culture by its art. Art sends a message to the future. So I want to see the next generation of young drummers in Singapore push the art form and push themselves well beyond the 21st century. And I hope my legacy can be the fact that I sparked someone else’s legacy. That is the purpose of all my traveling!”
“The young generation has to carry the torch. I am carrying the torch of my great teachers. It is a huge responsibility, and if you drop it, you end the message of music. So I say carry the torch high and run far!”
Dom Famularo’s books, namely The Weaker Side, Open Handed Playing Volume 1, Its Your Move: Motions and Emotions, Eighth-Note Rock and Beyond and motivational book The Cycle of Self Empowerment are available on his site http://www.domfamularo.com, Alfred Publishing, http://www.alfredpublishing.com and select music stores across Singapore.
