hi softies, hope you all can give me some advice on this.
i have been looking around for a good distortion pedal to go with my les paul. i have shortlisted 3 and i want to know which is more worth my cash. they all cost around the same, plus minus $50.

1. Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic
2. MI Audio Crunchbox
3. MIJ Boss DS-1

please give me your honest opinions from your experience. thanks in advance!

Firstly, what are you going for? What kind of tones are in your head?

Personally tried CB and DS-1 MIJ before..

Review of DS-1:

Crunchbox was too thin and weak to me, I tried asking around on TGP and most, if not all, acknowledge that the true rawness of the CB comes out when you use it with a slightly overdriven amp.

DS-1 silver screw is a superb pedal IMO, but 2nd gen MIJ works pretty well too. Great for rhythm, but too thin for lead work..

well, if u like the crunchbox, i would strongly recommend u go for seekz punchtone. somehow it reminds me of the crunch box, but BETTER.

Indeed. First time I tried Crunchbox is with the Punchtone.. And it REALLY REALLY made the CB pale in comparison.. Try it and you'll like it!

If you have the budget, I'd recommend the Barber small fry, burn unit, or the direct drive. There is a lot of hype about "boutique" effects, but if you play through the barber on a good guitar and amp, you'll hear the sound quality is really superior to the stock boss pedals. In fact I trust Barber quality so much, I'd buy a new pedal without even trying it out.

That said, I've never liked the boss DS-1, it always sounded too thin and nasty on any guitar I've tried.

CB is basically a +- modded DS1.

subversion, your blog is quite interesting to read and all those info about gears and stuffs like that.
well doneee.:D:D

thanks for reading 8-)

it's my documentation of whatever guitar-related issues which i don't input @ SOFT. also, it's my quick link for friends on re-curring topics + gear news/ new stuff which the shops contacted me to preview...

yeah thanks for the replies so far.

i went to try out all 3 listed pedals today all at ebenex today. with my own les paul of course.

i found the crunchbox quite to my liking, but for the price i can get the twin tube's versatility. but its rather troublesome as i think the twin tube doesn't run on 9v batts, i'll need the included adapter.

who knows where i can try out the punchtone?i would like to try it, before buying the twin tube.

This is for me the best option between the three. This pedal has never failed me live but continuous to surprise me in a very good way when I plug it in a different amplifier. One of the best feature that I like about this pedal is the MIDS that sing when I do solos. Also the true-bypass switch really does makes your tone a lot better. Crunchbox is also not that expensive too compared to other boutique distortion pedals.. in my opinion

Crunchbox is rather nasal sounding to me...and noisy! yikes.....

I'd go for the twintube classic among all those choices you listed....

DS-1, well, to me its better used as a booster than standalone drive!
