Discovering Fill-ins

Hello fellow drummers just want to know how u guys normally discover more fill-ins into ur grooves? Cuz i feel like im stuck doin the same fill-ins again and again :(

Listen to lots of songs. Pay attention to how the drummers use fill-ins for transitions. That's how I get my ideas. ;)

hello ceing,

listening to other drummers' fill in and copy/modify is one thing. If you are writing a song with your band, it will be best if u step out as a drummer, listen carefully what you band mates are playing, then step in as a drummer to do necessary fill ins which gel with your mates. It might be unison in a certain phrase during your fill in, going along with the accent of the song, contrasting with other instruments, messing around with time or the "question and answer" sort of fill ins. All these will create a certain impact on the song itself.

Well, thats my opinion.

Just experiment around I guess, and practise basic rudiments a lot, then when you play you'll slowly apply them to your fills.

haha i dunno if this problem is cyclical. I ve experienced it, seemingly overcame it, then experienced it again, and once more seemingly conquered it, and now ONCE A-FREAKIN-GAIN im stuck with it. but i think rudiment practise is a good way to solve it, i need to learn to discipline myself to practise my rudiments. heh

hey guys thanks for the comments and seems like i have plenty of homework to do to increase my fill-ins vocabs. ;) Meanwhile keep the comments coming! the more the better! :)

jam to different genres of music. you'll discover fill ins on your own, that fit that style.

for eg,
i produce very different fill ins when i'm jamming to:
a) red hot chili peppers
b) muse

a)'s heavy on snare drum, b)'s heavy on toms n kick. just a natural change in my playing to suit the mood of the song i'm jamming to. it might work for u..

i really don't like erm applying a fixed pattern sorta thing, i like to feel the music. but it works, no doubt about it. i have learnt many fill ins by that method, and will continue to do so. but it'll all be very planned, a different sort of satishfaction at the end of the day, i feel.

would say paradiddles and flams the usual stuff you play on ur practice pad... basically mix the 2 to get pretty nice fills alot of ppl neglect flams but you have to note that they are an intregral part of drumming (also the reason why we have more then 3 toms to play around with lol) and yea practice with a metronome to get your fills down and ohh be an advid youtuber keke use ur resources well =) take care!

jesperz brought up a very important point. While you can learn all the fill ins there are through listening to songs and practising rudiments, it is important to listen to the what the other instruments are playing as well. You have to build your groove and fills according to the phrasing of the other instruments, and sometimes even the vocal melody.
