Practice pad with a pair of VF 5As and a good solid metronome 8)

+1

Personally I have an acoustic set with mesh heads, using a practice pad for a snare. No pedal at the moment but planning to get a Hansenfutz. I used the HQ Soundoff pads for quite a while but the neighbours still complained. Using mesh heads there have been no complaints so far. If I could afford a high-end electronic set with mesh heads I'd get one, but a low-end set with rubber pads wouldn't solve the problem much imho.

But, if in doubt and money is tight, don't splash the cash - a sticks, practice pad and metronome regime can do wonders :)

Pearl Rhythm Traveller

Small enough to fit into a 3 by 2 meter carpet, comes with these funky mesh heads that barely makes any noise (but you still can hear the hit of a stick or a pedal, but it's minimised to a point it's not disturbing). Also comes with rubber pads for cymbals so you can strike the cymbals and tada! no sound!.

Costs about $1000

Something lower cost:

Those TAMA or other brands have got practice pads, which are essentially thick sheets of rubber on a wooden surface that emulates the bounce of a stick on a snare drum. Excellent for practicing snare rudiments on these.

Costs about <$100 (might include sticks in bundle packages)

wow this thread came at the right time.. i voted for acoustic set with mesh heads, i think an acoustic set is quite important cos it maintians the feel of a standard kit

but then.. recently i received complain from my neightbours (directly downstairs)

i already mute my drums a lot, by putting like 2layers of old clothes on all the heads and cymbals (except the bass drum) and the whole kit is IN my bomb shelter) i played till like 10pm for the last few days due to a perf to rush then got their complain -.-

i am thinking that the disturbance is comming from the bass drum, as i only have a layer of carpet underneath it.

wonder would more layers of carpet solve the problem....

It probably is the bass drum. That's why I don't play mine at the moment. It can be damn annoying though. I just played a bit using VF 3As on mesh heads and they knocked on their ceiling today (my kit is in the bedroom, though). So I switched to maple sticks and they didn't do anything - but can't tell if that's the reason. I'm going to be playing with maple sticks from now for practice and if they still complain... I'll have to call up the Town Council to check up on my rights.

What I found...

MISCELLANEOUS OFFENCES (PUBLIC ORDER AND NUISANCE) ACT
(CHAPTER 184)

Excessive noise
14. —(1) Any person who makes any noise by any instrument or other means in such a manner as to cause or be likely to cause annoyance or inconvenience to the occupier of any premises in the vicinity or to any person lawfully using any public road or in any public place shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $1,000.
[10/89]

(2) Any police officer, on any complaint that any person in any premises or in any public place is making such noise as to cause annoyance or inconvenience to the complainant, may enter upon the premises or proceed to the public place and, after warning the person reasonably suspected of making the noise, stop the making of such noise whether by the removal of any instrument or object or in some other appropriate manner.
[10/89; 12/96]

Relief for occupier of premises from nuisance
15. —(1) A Magistrate’s Court may act under this section on a complaint made by the occupier of any premises on the ground that as occupier of the premises he is aggrieved by noise amounting to a nuisance.
[10/89]

(2) If the Magistrate’s Court is satisfied that the alleged nuisance exists, or that although abated it is likely to recur on the same premises, the Court shall make an order for either or both of the following purposes:

(a) requiring the defendant to abate the nuisance, within a time specified in the order and to execute any works necessary for that purpose;

(b) prohibiting a recurrence of the nuisance, and requiring the defendant, within a time specified in the order, to execute any works necessary to prevent the recurrence.
[10/89]

(3) Proceedings under this section shall be brought against the person responsible for the nuisance or, if that person cannot be found, against the owner or occupier of the premises from which the noise is emitted or would be emitted.
[10/89]

(4) A person who without reasonable excuse contravenes any requirement of an order under subsection (2) shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $2,000.
[10/89]

(5) In any proceedings for an offence under this section in respect of noise caused in the course of a trade or business, it shall be a defence to prove that the best practicable means have been used for preventing, or for counteracting the effect of, the noise.
[10/89]

(6) In this section —

"noise" includes vibration;

"person responsible" , in relation to the emission of noise, means the person to whose act, default or sufferance the noise is attributable; and where more than one person is responsible for the noise, this section shall apply to each of those persons whether or not what any one of them is responsible for would by itself amount to a nuisance, or would result in a level of noise justifying any proceedings under this section;

"practicable" means reasonably practicable having regard among other things to local conditions and circumstances, to the current state of technical knowledge and to the financial implications.
[10/89]

sign.. i am thinking should be the bass drum too.. what to do.. i think even getting pratice kit wont solve the problem, cos the bass pedal will still wack the bass pratice pad, the about of vibration would still still be about the same.....

build urself a mini stage like what alvin did.. stuff it with foam, and u have eliminated the vibration caused by hitting the BD.

my set up isn't exactly quiet, but its enough for me to practise at night without neighbours giving me weird looks.

i'm using acoustic drums with acoustic foam stuffed inside all shells except the snare. bought a rubber pad thing ($22) from ranking for the bass drum as well. the kit is on a small carpeted platform 66" x 64" (got the dimensions from alvinthedrummer). to end off, i'm using vater whips.

did u buy the foam from alvin? and everything thats on ur kit recommended from alvin?? hehe the foam looks awfully familiar...

oh yeah are u also learning from alvin? music lab student ah??

no lah, not a musiclab student, i met alvin when i wanted to test the DNA kit (almost bought a pearl forum, but swee lee didn't let me test). alvin's a real friendly dude i must say

got the foam from Ranking, it was meant for the walls, but i had excess so stuff inside the drums lor. think there's another place that sells the foam...in burlinton sq. got the sabians cymbals from a fellow softie

hey....try puttiny a few laid cardboard boxes on the floor(don forget to tape them)and then lay ur carpet....it works for me...put extra under ur bdrum..
