hi there
wat are the difference between these 3 basses?
im interested in getting one of these in near future...
juz not sure wat are e differences..
im looking for 5 string...
thanks!! :D

bro my tentative decision for my pickup change is invader for bridge and duncan distortion for neck..
wat u think?
the duncan custom has lots more bass than the distortion?

the SUB series of instruments certainly do not sport a cheaper finish, it's a different finish & it adds to costs differently.

the SUB bass is also not a cheap reproduction of the Stingray, it's a different offering by the manufacturer, akin to what Fender does in the form of the Highway1 models.

to put things into perspective, is the Fender Aerodyne bass a poor man's Jazz bass? it is certainly not.

..

think of

stingray = fender precision bass. wider neck, 2,3,3 eq preamp w piezo pup, 2-3 pieces of wood to make up the body

sterling = fender jazz bass. smaller neck, coil tap selector, 2,3,3 eq preamp w piezo pup, 2-3 pieces of wood to make up the body

sub bass = fender hiway 1 wider neck, no body contours, passive/active, 2 eq preamp, poplar body, more pieces of wood which make up the body

apologies , error on my end.

finish wise : i got the idea from reading the MM fan forum , apparently there were several threads on the differences and quite a few people mentioned that the sub bass has a satin finish versus the MM stingray's heavy multiple coating polyurethane[cant remember , read the article quite a while back, the article also mentioned how some guy threw his stingray in a hardcase overnight in a car boot and the stingray finish changed colour]

bridge wise and pickup wise :

The Musicman bridge provided is the same as the Stingray and to the best of my knowledge the S.U.B. uses the same pickup as your standard Stingray.

the moderator of this sub forum claims the preamps on the sub bass is similar to the stingray :

no offense or anything , i might be a little confused since i wanted to get one the other time u recommend it to me and i read up and realised there were a few confilcting reports of the pups and preamps being similar to the stingray 4. the EB MM sub 1 , is a totally different axe from the stingray , yet it shares many if not heavily influenced aspects.

My opinion here is that the MM S.U.B be it the X01, X02 , X03 and X04 editions , are targeted at those who want a MM bass for the sake of a stingray look / sound / branding / image/ prestige , but the M.M S.U.B , more than hold its own against the as it has its individually unique sound. physically, a cheaper built stingray. sound wise , completly different beast altogether.

some of the people at the MM forum have never even handled the SUB basses, so read the views there with a pinch of salt.

Satin finishes has a different application procedures compared to the solid colour + lacquer overcoat. the former is more economical to implement but people tend to think that it's a second-rated finish.

Satin/Matt finishes rock for BLACK basses. No more fingerprints baby.

Yes, I'm starting to hate my P-bass too.
And the satin finishes seem to give an instrument a different voicing... seems like the wood really plays a part in the sound when it's devoid of a lacquer overcoat.
