yeah hopefully i'll own a fretless one day. the kinds of songs that use fretless basses sound quite fun to play. the slides sound really smooth on a fretless. its almost like its talking to you. MY BASS IS TALKING TO ME
I did. The wood putty exaggerates the "chipping", which in fact isn't chipped at all. If I had used wood veneer for all of them, it'd be as straight as the last one.
But good point nonetheless. In case anyone wants to try it out, you need to heat up the frets with an iron/soldering iron for a minute or so. If you want to be more kiasu, you can even soak the board where the frets are in oil to soften the wood.
yEP... well not soak but a round of english oil then a bit of solddering wax on each fret. I normally heat each fret till the glue "bubbles" ...then slowly yank (not slide) the frets out.
You could mix your wood putty with wood stain to get it almost the same shade as the rosewood before using it to fill? Then there'll be no chipping effect - even the fret slots won't be obvious.
They just ran out of the epoxy that I wanted to use and stocks won't be in till 4-5 months time... just found an alternative to it. Will post up my results on another neck that I'm working on now
