Death metal vocals

Hi all, guess you never thought I'd try my hand at vocals . But I'm usually able to sing clean gothic metal and black metal shrieks, but when it comes to death metal growls, I have trouble.

I have the know-how actually, I can get that growl for a few seconds, but after that my throat feels very painful. Any tips?

alex laiho kinda screams rules in death metal.between the highs and the lows.mid range growling.

Actually I'm more into low, guttutal growls like George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher's kinda vocals, or Glen Benton, Karl Sanders, Dallas Toler-Wade, etc.

I'm not sure if I can do Alexi Laiho kinda screams haha, I have a rather low voice I'm told. :)

To growl,

Do not try to use only your throat.
Try growling an "AHHHHH" with only your throat by exhaling(breathing out), you will hear that the sound is pretty weak and soft. It will cause extreme strain on the vocal cords and it will hurt within 5 minutes. Prolong straining will lead to vocal cords damage.

Now try this,
Do not growl at your throat first. You do not force the growling sound at the throat. Try to voice out "AHHHH" normally, DO NOT growl yet. Hold the "AAAHHH" sound for a few seconds with your normal voice. Now inhale a large volume of air as quickly as possible while still voicing out "AHHH". Inhale using your lungs and diaphragm, you will need to use them. The "AHHH" now becomes a growling sound.

When using your diaphragm, you are using your false vocal cords. It does not strain the vocal cords that much and you can growl longer without pain.
A good growl is when you do not feel painful and your growl is loud!!!

It will take a few practice to get the growl right. When you can growl, try to experiment with different shapes of the mouth to growl different words. Do not over strain your vocal cords, if you feel painful stop!!! Think of what went wrong, did you use your diaphragm for inhalation? Did you use only your throat to growl?

Happy growling:D

woo. ive succeeded a few times in growling .
George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher's kind and Alexi Laiho's kind.
sometimes i get the pitch of Dani Filth . but it takes time for me to get that stage.
the starting would be very very screwed. i have ta growl , gore a few minutes before getting to that stage.
