A tip on testing a snare drum:
unlatch the snare wires, and play drum from edge to centre (assuming the drum is in tune). As the drum loses it´s ringy tone toward the middle, you have the deadspot area. A better drum has less of a deadspot, and some have virtually no deadspot.
Also, never choke a snare drum bottom rim with a tight snare stand. The drum should rest on the stand and not be choked.
