i was juz wonderin wad the metal piece near the bridge of a rickenbacker bass 4? also da same thing on a Fender Marcus MIller Signature? any1 knows?

..

that be da bridge cover. supposed to stop the hum from the pickups, but

for rickenbackers, its a horseshoe shape yes?

for the old 4001 basses that is a vintage 'horseshoe' type pick up, for the modern 4003 basses its just a pickup cover

hmm ?

the shiny metal piece to cover the bridge and the pickup ??

if i m not mistaken those a shields to prevent the pickup from humming and creating intereference. some people think it helps , some people think its an eyesore.

those tend to be featured in vintage design basses (read : basses designed before 1970

its a pick up cover.
Apparently Leo fender thought that placing one there will help protect the pick ups.
However, most bassists did away with it cuz it restricts mobility and esp for the rick, you'd have to change the way u slap with the cover on.

if it protects frm hum? y dun they use a humbucker PU? pardon my ignorance..wont it interfere wif ur playing hand?

Err, because it won't sound the same with a humbucker? :?

Wake Me Up Music Shop had a 4003 last time I saw. Think it was black

Think humbuckers didn't come about till the 80s for bass. Fender was still using single coils or something.

just to add (not 100% sure, but anyhow) :

the pickup covers provide shielding, just like how your computer speakers have a certain structure to prevent the magnetic waves from interfering with your monitor screen. the metal allows the magnetism of the pickups to be "enclosed" within and provides a bigger punch (and clarity) to your bass sound.

there. if anyone disagrees strongly, its ok, cuz its just thru my own research that i found this out. could've been passed by spoken word and hence inaccurate.

ah...nobody wanna be rickenbacker dealer here in singapore,i just love their bass, esp. this year, their colour of the year is blueburst, and its damn sexyyyyyyyyyyyyy

ouch.. at those prices , why not brand new ?

My vintage Stagg jazz bass comes with 2 pick up metal guards and a thumb rest when I bought it in 1978. I took off the 2 pick up metal guards and the pick guard as it looks awful.

Would be cool now if I still have the pick up metal guard but I threw it away long ago as it rusted badly

cheers
