Damn ticket prices!

Goin to gigs is something fun and enjoyable for many.
but with gigs held almost every weekends (supposingly you attend all of them)
and ticket cost up to $15 or maybe $20, it could drive a hole in your pocket,
especially if you're a student. (unless if you're a rich kid)
which i doubt most would even attend gigs!
And with the over rated term "support local music", which i do support!
and i believe that many also do.
Yet, expenses of school related and phone bills, projects, etc. gets in the way.
How can gigs have a full house?

So, should ticket prices be reduce?
or should there be like a student discount thingy?
or should there be a demostration against the rise of cost of living?

what do you guys think?
or am i saying rubbish?

I don't think you're saying rubbish, but I think you're between the lines of talking trash and spewing bull.

Nothing is free in this world, venues etc have to be paid for aswell.

hey man, give him a break will ya.. he is every band's most wanted kind of person. TO COME AND SUPPORT!! i mean this guy loves to go to gigs. He needs to spend money to get into the gig. i get wat he means when he burns his pockets! We performers/bands have to fork out money too to u know. We dun always have/get enough or no people at all to come down and watch us play. We rely on this kind of people. At least there should be understanding as such for tix prices to be reduced, Beat Merchant gigs always been cheap nowadays costing about 5 - 8 bucks. Theres no spewing bull here my fren.

$15-$20 IS quite a sum. Can spend that amount a local cd.

Then again how to cover cost of rental for loaction, equipment etc? Some of the gig organisers are kids too.

Solution? Organisers, bands AND audience gotta be realistic with their budget, and what to expect. A good location (and good sound) doesn't mean it will attract audience. And low ticket prices doesn't equate to good gigs.

Just my opinion though about some band that complain about location and sound and crap. To me it's that's looking at the micro level. Ever consider what the audience feel?

okay, probably i may say for my point of view.
take an example the other day.
i was looking forward to this gig on 31st jan for weeks man.
and guess what, something came up and money had to be used.
tho the ticket was 10 bucks, its more important when it comes to school.
and hell no im not talking trash! just voicing out as a struggling student
who enjoys gigs yet with financial issues. Oh well, guess the "MAN" always
gets their way.

thanks for your kind words tho.

unfortunately, in real world, theres always sacrifice and priority which we cant escape from, be it boy or man

its the way it is.

whats important, should be on how to get over it while the enviroment remained the same then to hope that the enviroment will change to suit us.

imho

Don't go to every gig? Since there isn't a tradition of paying to pay a gig or auditioning for it. Not all bands are worth the bucks. Just watch the gig of bands that are worth it? Do your research before going. And about the price, other are also trying make a living. They also have phone bills, family and etc etc :)

Hold up man!

like i said, im just voicing out!
dont take me for an ignorant individual.
im into the music sence myself and i know whats goin on.
with the rental of venue and such bla bla bla..
then again, cases such as studios/venues have to closed down
cause of not much support happens.

but think about it, maybe just maybe!
if the prices are slightly reduce the chances of more
people considering will be more isn't it?
probably increase in tickets sale.

and for the gig goers, mostly are students ranging from
teens to tertiary level, to compare,
eating at fast food outlets, what makes them tick is that
the availabilty of student meals and such.
almost everyone are looking for special discounts nowadays.

dare you to tell me that you never bargain in your life!
unless your rich, but even the rich can be a scrooge!

in that case, expect the same no. of crowd for years to come
if that would be the issue. unless a miracle happens.

im not attacking or being one sided,
i still go to gigs despite the prices, but for the majority?
well, i would just love to go to gigs where by spaces are filled
by screaming crowds everytime. then again, looks like the echos are staying.

that boils down to each person's priorities

so for an avg guy: band, gf, gigs, friends, family, job

1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)

you can fill up your list based on what's most impt to least impt from 1 to 6?

fug all you flamers

give the dude a break

heh, with a response like this, you are really showing your age and not justifying others who are round your age but so much more able to sustain a proper views sharing session and finding a common point among disagreement

dont despair though, wisdom comes with experience and things seen in life when you are older.

for now, just enjoy the days of being young sexy and dangerous

[=ralphee;

i was a a student and i was once a starving musician.

as for ticket prices. i believe in a few things.

1. pay peanuts get monkey, dun expect kick ass sound, awesome atmosphere, free beer and BJ.

2. if tix prices are "expensive" expect quality equipment, kick ass sound, free beer and bj and all the candy.

i am in and out of the gig scene from playing in dodgy jam studio turn gig venue to a nice club to a hall with 5000 ppl turn up, for as long as i can remember in multiple bands, and most of the gig 90% of the time did not get paid *grinz*. from the substation open air to some fancy disco.

but if i am playing on stage, we as musician try our best to get the best possible sound from coming early to sound check, spending hugo mungo cash on equipment to punching and beating up the FOH for not listening to us.

But how good can the sound be if u are paying $8 and we play going thru a 100 watts combo amp!@#!@#!@#!@#, the jam studio got better equipment!

or $25 tix organized by Pony Canyon with all 5 big metal bands , with 2 stacks of 2x4 thru a 500 watts head (bass), back by 100000watts PA and monitor, lighting, smoke effect, and a 2 stacks of 4x12 , 5150 & Marshall head. Free beer :) and the band actually got $1000 for our effort.

if you are a consumer, the choice are very clear. But as a band, i would rather play the $25 gig and as a fan i would go for the $25.

if the fans are cheap, than sorry to say singapore will forever be a cheap scene.

Kudos to the last line, lordie.

But the current trend in organizing is pretty cool imo: One location, one day, but a gazillion bands. It's a win-win situation on both sides - consumer gets more diversity with low price, bands get exposure when people who didn't specifically come for them 'discover' them at the gig, organizers will be able to sell more tickets.

I'd pay $20 or more for this, if there were bands I were interested in listening to live.

WOW! +10! good post!
