Crack on my guitar body

I have a crack which is about 10cm long at the back of my guitar body. Its not deep or anything.. maybe 0.3cm deep? I dont think its affecting the tone of the guitar yet. I did enquire for a patch up job at penin, and they say the damage cost will be about 200-500 bucks. I was like woah! So i went to diy shop buy wood glue and glue myself. I dunno if that was a good idea. Are there any other methods i can patch up this crack? Im also worried if the crack will deteriorate in time.

Is the guitar a solid body or an acoustic?

If you have put wood glue into a crack on an acoustic it should stop the crack getting longer. Where is the crack - in the directions of the grain of the wood, near the edge of the guitar? If the guitar is cheaper than the cost of the repair then i wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get longer.

If it is on an acoustic, you can glue wooden cleats, or patches across the crack which will take the stress of the crack. They don't have to be very large, maybe 3 to 4 long and 1 cm wide by a mm or 2mm thick. This will certainly stop the crack growing.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Mark.

Hey mark,

Thanks for the advice. =) yeah its a solid body electric guitar. The crack is from the edge of the body all the way to the centre of the body. Its against the grain of the wood i would presume.

Like u said, im just hoping the crack wont grow and worsen. =x

thanks again

Not a prob.

If the body is cracked and it is not from the neck joint into the body, you should be fine. The glue should hold it unless you want to try doing Hendrix and Pete Townshend tricks on stage!

Have a good one.

Mark.

I think if the crack is against the grain of the wood, it's less likely to get wider compared with if the crack follows the grain of the wood. Shouldn't be a problem.
