OK,
Bought my 2nd guitar just recently via this site.
Didn't check it thoroughly cos I don't really bother about cosmetic look of the guitar.

However, happen to see this crack on either side of the guitar and I hope you guys can help me.

1) How can this type of crack happen?
2) Will it affect the guitar in any way (except cosmetic wise)?
3) Will it get worst down the years?

Thanks

1) maybe the previous owner knocked the guitar into something.
2)i dont think it will affect the guitar except cosmetic wise.
3)if you take good care of it i dont think it will get worse.

hop this helped. :D

I'm no expert but it does not look serious to me, more of a paint or finish hairline crack. But then again it's kinda hard to say.

just appears to be a hairline crack, common enough for bolt on guitars?

if it chips off then you might have a problem, you can check the severity by unscrewing the neck and looking at the body, if the wood itself is cracked then you might have a big problem :D

take a closer look to make sure. if it's just a crack on the finish there shouldn't be much of a problem, if the wood itself cracked, then there is a problem...

very common problem among bolt on guitars as mentioned earlier. it shouldnt pose as a problem but cosmetically it is quite an eye sore. if your guitar is a FR equipped guitar, try pushing down the bridge and observe the crack. if it moves, its bad.

it shouldnt be a problem for strats though.

I got these cracks on one of my strats, its generally a common problem. Especially if you hold the guitar by the neck when moving it in and out of the case/bag.

To answer your questions:

1) How can this type of crack happen?
The neck/heel joint is a high stress area. In addition, the paint around that area is much thinner than compared to the front/back of the guitar due to the curvatures and tight corners there.
The cracks usually appear due to several variables. Wood expands/contracts due to humidity , the screw being made of metal doesn't. Holding the guitar by the neck adds to the stress at that area. Having the tight neck/heel joint will cause this problem as well. But that may be a good thing :)

2) Will it affect the guitar in any way (except cosmetic wise)?
No for this specific problem

3) Will it get worst down the years?
Possibly, it depends on how you handle the guitar. I've seen steve vai's guitar and its got some monster spiderweb cracks. Doesn't seem to affect his tone, or him for that matter.
