Hi guys!

as far as i knw the compressor is used for sustains and and for more added gain! ( pls correct me if im wrong )

But the prb is as i was enquiring abt it to expand my rig, some said :
only for clean sound only!

now im not really sure, im confused!

Could someone pls shed some light on this topic?

Thanx!
Cheers!

im not too sure abt this too, but i know that on a clean channel, a compressor will sound more obvious, clamping notes, giving that kind of 'country tone'

a compressor evens out the volume of all the frequencies in your sound.

this levels the volume of your playing even if you pluck or strum some strings harder/softer than the others

it does add sustain in that sense because it makes ur softer notes louder. but it also makes louder notes softer - thus it evens out the sound, i.e. it 'compresses'. you get the idea?

it is not "only for clean sound" as your friends told you. it can be used with distortion as well. it is used quite often for rhythm guitar, so as to get a uniform volume throughout. however, not so suitable for lead because it removes the dynamics from your playing - you can't accentuate notes because the compressor evens out your picking. also makes it hard to accentuate rhythm playing, also because of the volume uniformity that a compressor creates.

Hey Thanx MrE!

i actually did a reply at skool but couldnt get through!
sadly i don hv permanent internet connection at home! (pay as u surf)

thanx for the insight on it! i really had my brains pondering on it for a long time! as for me i like to play a combination of both clean wif chorus and dist! as in i mean im not on dist all the way throughout the whole song! but there are songs where i do dat la hehe!

ive got a better understanding on it now!

cos my prb was getting dat longer sustains to my wanting!
but im not really sure i wanna get it yet cos so far ive been able to even out the volume by EQing my rig and amp!

Cheers

You don't need a compresor. You need a gibson LP.

OR, just get some hotter pickups for longer sustain. $3000 cheaper than the Gibson

There are many guitars that can sustain longer than a LP. The bridge, tuning heads, nut all play a very big part. Simply getting higher output pups does not equate longer sustain.

From what I know, hotter pickup, which means stronger magnet will reduce sustain.

But anyway, we strayed too far from the topic already.
