coloured strings.

hey folks,i've heard of coloured strings and i find it pretty cool.Just wanna ask if the colour coated on the strings will be gone after extensive playing?

don't bother about it unless you intend to leave your guitar relatively untouched for long periods of time.

Search SOFT for coated strings.

the coating is super easy to scratch off. so the color runs off. and if you keep it for a long time it'll start flaking. like dandruff all over your strings.

so my advice is get a cheap but good pair of strings like ernie ball or curt mangan. last you quite a long time. mine lasts like 2 months with minimal rust.

if rust is a problem, wipe down every time after you play.

haha i see...so coloured strings are more expensive i suppose? ...IMO i think gibson strings are pretty good and lasting.

the DR extra life costs like 18 bucks frm davis. but yeah, the colour flakes off especially around the area where you pick most. thogh it takes abit longer for the fretting side to flake, it does. but it's cosmetic, though it darkens the tone a tad bit.

Hmm.

I find that the coloured strings are a gimmick which only serve the most image conscious players.

Ernie ball strings (hybrid slinkies) are the ones for me.

Gibson strings are alright, but I feel that unless the two nice salesgirls in guitar gallery are hanging around, the trip to Parklane is kind of wasted

the two girls at gg are worth the travel only if the grumpy old man aint there man.

and for me, i either use ernie ball or dean markley .09's. smooth and sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

yea i tired black diamond coloured cuz i got irritated by rust and i really regretted it... the coat of colour relaly comes of super fast and they start to rust all over again and its like some parts coloured someparts rust with the above mentioned (dandruff) all around ur guitar, on ur fretboard, pickups, between pickups... after awhile (epsecially if u use black), it looks like ur guit is decomposing, serious!

Well, the coateds are not without their use.

Yes the coating will flake off.

But if you are leaving the guitar alone for long periods of time, it makes sense.

1 other thing good about coateds is that you have more consistant tone over time compared to normal strings which will oxidise much faster. Of course, the tone in the first place is duller.

Hmm.

So far the brightest sets I have tried are the GHS super steels, which are incredibly bright, but eat away the frets like nobody's business.. hence my switch to enrie balls, which have good tone and seem to last long.

Gibsons lasted only 1 month for me which was quite disappointing. Tone dulled within 4 weeks.

my Ibanez RG above had DR's coated set, lasted for 11weeks, played daily. the DR coated version is much better in terms of coating retention compared to the Black Diamonds. i have ceased using any coated strings when the non-coated ones last just as long with enhancements of course...

the black diamonds are like no match for the DR extra life coated strings...but coated strings kills ur tone

im enjoyed using the DR coateds once, but found that they don't really last long with me, coz i'm a HARD FRETTER, haha and veri abusive to my strings too, and yes tone is in the fingers, so you want more tone, pick harder and fret harder, but your strings frets and picks wear out faster

$18 is too much for monthly expenditure, but now after shredcow has put it, i might consider going back, as i hardly have time to play guitar nowadays

The tone is duller. Harmonics don't ring out as well. All in my experience.

However, as mentioned, you get consistant tone lah.
