one of my basses is starting to see some green stuff on the frets. it won't wipe off and stuff... read up somewhere that it's patina or something like tat.

anyone know how to get it off? much appreciated ya...

i think its just oxidation. use brasso can already, but careful not to leave it on the wooden fretboard. if its rosewood, use lemon oil and soft cloth and rub over the fretboard to clean.

lemon oil not effective for the metal parts lah i feel. brasso is more powerful. but lemon oil good for getting shit out of the fretboard wood. i used it on the fretboard of my then BRAND NEW bass and the cloth turned brown (rosewood)

anyway all the dirt an oxidation can be avoided if you wipe down the guitar after playing. especially if u got sweaty palms. EEE

If using a metal polish for the frets, remember to stick (low adhesive) duct tape along the frets to prevent tainting the fretboard.

1. lemon oil or linseed oil on the rosewood fretboard... wipe the whole thing; getting it on the frets is fine

2. get a couple of strips of masking tape, cover both sides of the fret

3. brasso on cloth, rub frets to a shine. lather, rise, repeat.

where do you get linseed oil? i've searched high and low for it but i cant find them in hardware stores. the closest i got was tung oil but it wasn't pure. I use it on my raw warwick neck but it leaves a sticky 'furniture' feel after that.

Anyone?

i highly recommand Autosol. really excellent for polishing frets and last a long time. can be removed easily from the fretboard easily with lemon oil. can be found in any hardware shop. comes in a toothpaste-like packaging. should cost something like $5.. can also use it to polish the other metal hardware.

hi bros,

Autosol can be good but do be carefull coz if use too much, it will slowly remove the shine out off the frets. Seen it before on my friends chrome bike parts. Just to share

i used autosol on my belt buckle before and it kinda turned yellowish.... :( so i wouldnt say it's a good method to clean up ur frets... just my opinion..:)

yes, autosol does eat into the surface. if the metal is chrome coated, then an overuse of it will errode the coating. gotta be careful with that. but since the frets are solid, i think it doesn't really matter.

amateur_bassist, i only use autosol on guitar frets. they're already yellowish. hehe.. but i had no problem using it on my motorcycle. just beware if your metal is coated.
