Hmm today in church i waited outside after mass for about 45 mins and saw this man called Donald i asked him if he could teach me and he said he doesn't teach basics....he told me he is very busy and would like me to come back in 2 weeks time to show him my stuff.

So what chords should every beginner know?

I have been playing guitar for 5 months already.

I know C mag , A mag , E mag , F mag , D mag
A min , D minor , E minor ,

by mag you mean major right ?

think probably now you're playing in the open position right ? so now you can just learn how to play barre chords, and with the "A" pattern, and "E" pattern on barre, you can then play other chords by shifting the position of the barre (you can take an open position as having a barre before the first fret, and every fret you move the barre, you move up one semi-tone i.e a #, so like 022100 [laststring->firststring] is E, 133211 would be F, and 244322 would be F#)

similarly you can move other open position patterns.... but well, think E and A positions are the easiest to start off with. You can move the Em and Am positions too.

Then after this i guess learn the less common ones like.......Asus2 or Amaj7 or something like that etc etc.....

How about root and major 3rd and root and minor 3rds.

ya, you get a song book with chords and play them. anyway, there can only be so many chords. it is how you play them, make them sound nice in a song.

ah, better still, try to play all the church songs!

start by strum strum, when your fingers are stronger then you can pluck pluck. Arpeggio

hmm..seriously , even though my brother plays in the church band , i dunno how to play any church songs.

I need a good chord book. Any suggestions where to get? I got one but kinda messy , its called popular chords for rock or something.

You can go Borders the CDs section to find it among the shelves. Or you can go music shops like sweelee bras basah.

There's a shop in Parklane that sells instructional books.
When you are good enough you can even come up with chords and name it after yourself!

Learn the Major Chords in 1st position
Learn the Minor Chords in 1st position
Learn to alternate between them.

That's more than enough for "basic", can play most pop songs already

After, Learn the 7ths in Maj and Minor in 1st position
Learn the Sus 4ths too.
then learn to alternate between them.

After this, you can definitely play most pop songs.

Learn Diminshed and Augmented chords afterwards
Then read up on some chord theory. By then you would be very well versed in chord structures and will have no problem figuring out the more obscure chords.

After this, practice the chords for 2nd 3rd octave and ++ positions

Voila! You are now the most sought after chord master!!

PS: Warning, millions of hours of practice ommitted from this description

Alright this is just what i need although i felt abit blur after reading the part about 7ths in Maj and Minor in 1st position.

Ah well, its juz a guide.

The 7ths in major and minor are extensions to the maj and minor chords, to give it a more "jazz" open....crystal feel....

As for the dimished and augmented chords, its another evolvement of the chords. New feelings and sounds.

For the position, i mean in relation to the fretboard. 1st position is the top few frets...2nd is the middle...3rd is just before the octave....etc

Anyway, that was how I started....learned alot of chords before getting into the solo stuff....(Its not definite, diff pple have diff tactics)

Very good to buy a chord book too. Plus some online website for chord theory too.....but I can't remember the site....gimme some time to look for the URL...(saw it in Guitarist magazine)...maybe the other dudes wanna help..

read up some chord theory, spend a day on it...ur chord vocabulary will expand by x 100..more efficent way of learning chords..no memorization needed

sus chords..simply replaces the 3rd in the chord with a 4th or 2nd degree of the maj scale ..making it technically a "genderless" chord..neither major nor minor..

7ths are but chords extended to include the 7 or b7 in tat key of the chord..say a C = C(1) + E(3) + G(5) note, a C7 = C + E + G + Bb(b7) ...or Cmaj7 = C + E + G + B(7) . or Cm7 same as C7 but with b3(Eb)
