chinese song chord

If there's one thing I learnt from some of these bands, it's that certain partso f the song dun always have to go to V before it resolves to I. Example, Some chorus may go, I, vi, IV, then go I vi IV, then IV V I/vi . It lends the song some tension at some point and creates some surprisingly refreshing melodies becos of the jump from IV straight back to I. If you get what I am talking about.

ELT (Jap) also has some great songwriting.

lots of the songs have this part where the instruments will play quietly with the vocals on top, then they will all come back in with the chorus. Very predicitable. I enjoy listening to new albums with my friends and telling them what the next part is going to be like.

its over done by Nirvana and smashing pumpkin, the quiet loud thing. Very nice but overdone.

FIR imo is just a rip off of DAI. kns they haven have the similar 3 letter abbrev. and DAI is just soo much better plus the guitarist can actually play.

Anyway, what are some chinese rock bands that have great compositional ideas? Esp getting out of the normal (I - vi - IV - V, I - ii - vi - V / etc..) progressions?

Well, maybe you can check out this 3-piece Chinese band from Taiwan called Tizzy Bac, they only have a drummer, bassist and a vocal/keyboardist.

Some rap-rock stuff from Monkey Insane also from Taiwan

There is another Jap rock band- the Brillant Green which consists of 2 guys and a gal vocal. I love their music and prefer them over DAI. They sound more edgy and indie. Its a shame that they are now on a long hiatus.

When it comes to mainstream chinese rock, I only like Mayday, catch hooks and interesting guitar lines. I personally can't stand Shin, most of their songs I've heard are rather boring SOP ballads. Hardly hear the guitarist in the verse then he play some chords with distortion during chorus and finally a solo.

:) Actually its good somethimes to try out and explore own new progression :)..... yeah bassline also do contribute in the songs. For bass u can play the different notes as long its within the chord... this is how improvision goes lar haha. Tt also tells why bass is so important in songs :)

Chinese songs are just like any typical pop/rock music ... progressions are rather standard ... but definitely not all are as simple as CANON though. ;)

Chords typically used in pop songs progressions can contain alot of Hybrids, Altered/jazz chords especially in dominant or chromatic positions. You may wanna look more into these areas of studies. Maybe buy yourself a song book for pop Piano. Coz most of these songs are based on harmony from Piano.

Look out for chords iike X7(b5), X6, X9, and certain accidentals which replaces the tonal character of a Chord. For example, substituting a dominant chord for a super-median chord .... 2, 5, 1 substitutions .... Chromatically linked chords ... walking basslines ... stuff like this.
