cheapskate straplocks!! learn how to make one!

hey guys i thought it'd be helpful to share this.

Does your guitar fall to the ground because of a crappy strap or crappy strap button?

If yes, u'll be considering a strap lock or the planet waves locking strap(which isnt expensive but hey, i'm kinda a cheapo still)
Firstly, the dunlop straploks are awfully big and they require the old buttons to be removed.

but then, people like me, who sometimes have to starve for 2 days to buy a new set of strings, like doing things for ourselves.

All you needs is a:
-medium/hard pick
-scissors
-cutting skills

i came out with and idea of cutting up a pick to slot it in between the guitar strap and the button. however, before i could try it, i realized someone on youtube already came up with that idea!! heres the link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLCcrnzVZQ0
he says 'nipple' alot which is seriously irritating
but anyway i went on to try it out myself.
here's a picture of mine. (i used a pink pick for contrast)

THIS WORKS. i cannot, no matter how hard i try to deliberately pull the strap off. if you want to remove your strap, just pull the pick out. simple!

however a few things to note:
1. The opening to slot the pick in has to be tight. meaning, the width of the entrance has to be slightly, i mean slightly smaller than the diameter of the button on the inside. this will prevent the 'straplock' from falling out. not too small also or else it cant even go in.

2. Its not easy to cut especially if u're using a hard pick. but do not use soft picks as they might break. i recommend medium or somewhere in between medium and hard.
3. Mark the area where u're cutting it will make things much easier and less prone to mistakes. also, measure the diameter of the inside of the button then start marking the pick.

those who swear by schaller or dunlop straplocks, stick with it as that is proven and is heavy duty. but for musicians out there who like doing things for themselves, this might be a fun, cheap and effective way to keep ur strap in place.

HOPE THIS HAS HELPED.
I assure you this works and it will cost at most 50cents or maybe a dollar if u screw one up and have to make another.
a 'thank you' will be very much appreciated!

Cheers!

not bad, seems like it should work. but you never know until you really test it out extensively. i wouldnt trust it.

when i saw the thread title the first thing i thought of was... duct tape.

the only flaw i see is when the strap pulls upwards and bends the pick. after sometime the pick might break. using a hard pick is better, but its much harder to cut.
i've jammed with it. it works for me

read in a guitar mag long time ago -- can use those plastic price tag found in most bread packs like gardenia, etc. never try it though. and recently also in another guit mag this guy use a rubber washer

If you want to use plastic cheap stuff, don't they have those twisty straplocks for like 2 bucks?

Also, the rubber washers are Grolsch beer bottle gaskets.

This comes up every once in a while heh.

Here's what you can get for 50 cents (or less) per lock.

A lot safer than something made of plastic I reckon.

Hi guys...
This is the very cheapskate straplocks using a duct tape for my punkrock guitar.. :)

Cheers....

hmm.. cheap alternative for strap locks eh?
im using duct tape now, seems to work well , but anyways, the pick doesnt seem too trusty, maybe u can follow beat merchants style, they put a huge metal washer instead.. seems to hold really well..

duct tape is ugly. placing a washer there means u cant take out ur strap anymore. i want to take out my strap after playing. it works for me. thats all i can say. results may vary on what kind of guitar or how u cut or what kinda pick u use.

I agree with Hidrofly as well. But I do think that duct tape looks ruggedly cool and macho. But It spoils the finish of the guitar when you remove it. I tried it on my old yamaha EG303 looong time ago

just buy the dunlop straplocks, they work like a dream. and the amount of research put into it should give you peace of mind.

I echo Daryl's sentiment as well. Why cheapen out when you have already spent a substantial amount for your guitar? Strap locks are not ridiculously expensive IMO.

duct tape damn punk mah... its all about teh fehsyen!!!

anyways, the last i checked grolsh are available at most supermarkets like carrefour. I don't really like this beer.
