Cheap Yamaha Keyboard? or other brands?

Hi,

I recently saw one Yamaha Keyboard (DGX200) at one of the Sim Lim Square shop. It was only valued at $480. However, in Yamaha shop, this would have been sold for around $624. Hmm... still pending whether to buy it or not... any comments on how i shld validate my purchase? Besides, the shop owner said that it has 1 yr warranty.

Actually, I am looking for a keyboard with good piano sounds and piano style preferably. My budget is ard $700. And i prefer classical music... Does anybody have any other brands to recommend for this?

Thanks.

teck, for that amount of cash you´d be better off looking for a 2nd hand yamaha like a sy series. The feel of the keys are way better than a djx. Then, hook it up to your computer and use a bunch of piano samples instead. The djx´s really suck on feel, plus most yamaha´s cost way too much for whatever you´re getting. If you´re unsure as to whether you´re going to do this in the long haul, then maybe a casio would be a better bet. If not, then look into a low end synth like a trition le or something.

I agree that the SY series has better touch than the DGX, but the piano sounds in the SY series are really bad. Also, don´t forget that getting a synth like SY means buying monitor speakers - more cost there.

Actually I´m pleasantly surprised by the DGX´s piano sounds. Not the best but it is very good for a portasound (better than the SY pianos). The build-in speakers are really good (especially the bass - got a subwoofer and a tweeter). The touch is cheapo - what else can you expect from a portasound. I do agree that if you want to invest long term (especially if you´re a pianist), look for something more than a portasound. If you want just to tinkle around, DGX is not too bad. A few of its functions are silly, like losing your stored memory once you unplug the power. Also, it has only 32 notes polyphony. If you want to play classical, you should really get at least a keyboard with semi-weighted keys. Perhaps throw in a few hundred more dollars and get a Roland ep series with build-in speakers? Otherwise the Roland RD150 is not bad but has no build-in speakers. Korg SP series are not too bad either, but I think it is a costs a little more than the Roland.

Hi,

Thanks alot for the advice. I was thinking of getting the Roland RD150... tried to look for places like swee lee, but they dun have it... they told me it was discontinued and recommended the RD700 which cost around 2k. Definitely out of my budget. Is there any used merchandise places in Singapore where i can get my hands on a weighted keyboard? Or any other recommended brands which is abt 1k???

Thanks.

regds,

Hi, for $700, maybe quite hard to find one unless it's used item.

one option is a M-audio 88 key controller for $450.
and look for a used sound/piano module with the rest of your budget.

does these include tutorial inside?
