Changing of Pickup Covers

Hey guys!

Okay here's the deal. I got a GL-400 from SV about a month ago.. And I think due to my poor maintenance or over maintenance of the pickup covers, the gold is actually fading off and corroding.

So I was wondering if it was possible to just change the pickup covers. I'm thinking this time I'll go for chrome ones. Cause I think gold ones will just fade away again..

Now my question is... How do I go about changing the pickup covers? Is there anywhere I can get them and about how much would they cost!

Thanksss!!!!!

You can get the pickup covers from quite a few shops including TyMusic. I suggest you bring it to someone qualified though, it's not a simple "pop-in and pop-out" thing.

pickups might be waxed potted, so even after removing the covers there'll be some residue left behind. the covers are also soldered on i believe. its not going to be easy. i suggest u just get that thought out of ur mind. its gonna be alot more troublesome than it seems.

yup.. most of the covers are soldered to the pickups... and some manufacturers somehow "spammed" solder in between the covers and the pickups... i tried to desolder it but it was too difficult... and one pickup cover is quite expensive...

Ah cool thanks guys! But yea my pickup covers are really.. unsightly now. Though I dont think I wanna change the covers out yet. I'm hoping it'll wear off nicely to have a vintage look. Anyways someone PM-ed me telling me that he's charging 30 bucks per chrome cover including installation. Is that about the price for a cover? Its exxxxxxxxxx. lol.

exxxxxx?? thats pretty much reasonable and cheap if the job is well done...

if you find that exxx, live with the faded look. And fyi, most gold hardware for guitar will fade away not matter what... and if you search around more forums or read up, gold hardware fading off/tarnishing is one of the most common complain....

Why change it? The gold plating will tarnish no matter how you take care of it. Its a waste of money changing the covers whenever it tarnished. And, the pickup covers for humbuckers do not come cheap.

Ah.. Well I thought if I wanted to change I'd get chrome covers instead. But anyhows. Okay this is a funny thought. Any way to accelerate the corrosion? Cause when the gold fades away, a nice silver is revealed. Lol. So my pickup sides are silver-ish. I'm hoping the rest would follow suit. ;p
