Cats in the Cradle

"My child arrived just the other day,
He came through the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed, and
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
were gonna have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's have the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
you know well have a good time then."

Man... awesome stuff.

Well, to hijack the thread since we are on the subject of good lyrics.

Lyrics by Stephen Morrissey
Music by Johnny Marr

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh ...

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me ?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room

Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la ...

I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?

I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."

It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over

Love is Natural and Real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is Natural and Real
But not for such as you and I, my love

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can even feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...

think the best lyrics ever written by morissey would have to be either in frankly mr shankly or bengali in platforms! wouldn't you give your left nut to have seen them live before they broke up?

8O wah shredcow, going old skool I see! I remember that song when I was in my younger days and my pastor opened his sermon reading out those lyrics.

IMHO, if you want, I'd recommend songs by Bob Dylan, He is the main man who made me listen to the words of the music rather than the music itself, Thanks to my Dad who used to blast his songs on his Vinyl player when I was growing up!

Here's a few recommendations-

Like a Rolling stone-Bob Dylan
Don't think twice, its alright
Times they are a-changing

Also beautiful poetry by Jimi hendrix(I just had to lah)

Castles made of sand
Wind Cries Mary
Angel

and I particularly like this sappy sentimental number by Don Henley of the Eagles--

The heart of the matter

Good luck on your journey! :D

Hehehe.

I'm not really going old school but I do yearn for a return to substance. I look at the music going on today, i turn on the radio, I look at MTV... the music's stale. Radio's gone gaga. MTV is truely eMpTy tV.

Heck. Even metal like good old Megadeth had a measure of substance!

Substance not = to just real life meaningful applicable story-telling but just story-telling in general... the songs used to take people on magical journeys, wonderful imagery and just ... vast lyrical landscapes.

Music is one thing. I enjoy listening to Paul Gilbert's solo outings... the songs are fun and the music, the guitar playing, is great! but hte lyrical content leaves much to be desired sometimes...

But making the lyrics speak out over the music... that, I think, is timeless in itself.

There are few songs which bring out strong emotions through their lyrics, and this is one of them. Priceless song. Not the empty songs you hear nowdays, they are lyrically empty

lyrically empty

I like this... very apt description.

Here's some lyrics of a song by Rush. Its called The Trees. And its talking about more than trees... duh.

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunligh
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(and theyre quite convinced theyre right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks cant help their feelings
If they like the way theyre made
And they wonder why the maples
Cant be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream `oppression!`
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
the oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light
Now theres no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw ...

bro uglyfunk bro, those are the brutally snide and funny lyrics... But still damn good yeah!

For good lyrics, why look further than Leslie Low's? I can't find the Humpback Oak's ones... or his solo ones. So I'm using the lyrics from The Observatory's 'How's Life?'

how's life?
living like this
how is life?
we'll see
life is slow
do we know
if it's meant to be?

what to do?
there's nothing new
is there any place to go?
nothing comes
& nothing goes
& our faces in reluctance show

life's good
that's what they say
but by the way
by the way
life's incomplete so
so we slip & it's all downhill

what to do?
& do we know?
do we know we're in luck or no?
what to do?
& do we grow?
do we ever grow up or no?

how's life these days?

do we ever grow up?

so we slip & it's all downhill

how's life these days?

no fair pulling out leslie low his lyrics always power lah not like my stupid band... but for my most recent (not v recent anymore leh) local music lyric rush i have to nominate the hidden/last track from the new concave scream album... considering our 'ageing(rapidly! especially around the middle!) youth' age group i found them especially poignant. and fairly depressing...

but nothing can beat bengali in platforms!
