Can't record on Cubase 4 AI

Hi all,

I'm currently running my DAW through a NI Audio Kontrol 1 with a Yamaha KX61 hooked up to the AK1 via MIDI IN/OUT. Using Garritan Personal Orchestra as my soft synth.

Everything seems to be working fine. Eg. AK1 drivers installed, Cubase 4 AI and Garritan able to detect my AK1. I'm quite sure my connections are correct.

KX61 > AK 1 via MIDI OUT (KX61) / MIDI IN (AK1)

DAW > AK1 via USB

However the problem lies with the fact that I can't record anything on Cubase 4 AI if I were to hook my KX61 via AK1 to my DAW. Everytime I try to record a track with my current setup, there are no soundwaves generated.

If I were to take the AK1 entirely out of the picture and instead hook up my KX61 to my DAW via USB directly, I can record audio sounds in Cubase 4 AI perfectly. However the reason why I hook my KX61 to the AK1 is because of constant clipping if I were to hook my KX61 to my DAW directly using the default speakers.

Any advice on this matter is very much appreciated.

Cheers

I guess you would have done all the obvious? IE: check in Cubase that your midi channel is correct, that you've selected AK1 as the midi interface, that you've selected GPO patches as outputs etc? Are there any sounds when you just play without recording?

AKi, KX and Cubase set up

Hi Julius

My guess is that you are trying to record 'audio' but the set up is 'midi'. You are confusing midi and audio. I am not sure about the track routing features in Cubase but Try the below:

1. connect the KX to midi in of AK 1

2. Load garritan or absynth into a 'Midi' track in cubase and arm the track - dont begin recording. Now when you play the KX you should see the fader on the midi track rise- which means the track is recognizing the midi signal. You should be abe to hear the sound.

3. Now you can either play and record everything as ' Midi'- you wont see waveform bu just midi notes. OR

4. Route this midi track to an 'Audio track' in cubase and arm the track. Now bein recording and stary playing. The midi tracks should send the sound to teh audio track and you should be able to see the waveform in the audio track.

Let me know if this works or give me a call.

thks

Cheez : There are sounds when I play without recording. When I record, I can still hear the sounds being played but Cubase isn't able to capture the sounds I play when recording.

Cubase doesn't capture the "sound", but rather the midi signals, since the sound comes from GPO which is a plugin. When you record, are the midi signals being recorded (ie you see the notes in notation view, or whatever view you are using)?

Nope midi signals not captured.

And please don't tell me Cubase 4 AI is exclusively for Yamaha-Steinberg products?

why is it that u have clipping sounds on ur speaker if ur kx61 is directly connected to ur laptop or watever? Coz i hook up my kx8 this way, and i dun have any problems. Try downloading the latest driver from yamaha.

Make sure ur midi cables are connected correctly and it is instrument or midi tracks instead of audio tracks. in cubase, make sure ur midi input on the midi or instrument track is ur audio kontrol input, ur midi output goes into ur garritan, den the audio goes into ur speakers.

Okay problem solved.

Stupid me went to load garritan "outside" of Cubase when in actual fact it should be loaded in Cubase as a VST.

Thanks for the help guys.
