When you are asked that question, do you have difficulty answering it?
What does it mean when you say you can play the guitar?

Does being able to play 15 - 20 chords, some barre chords, strum and accompany
yourself singing qualify as "can play the guitar" ?

No.

What does it mean when you say you can play the guitar?

To be able to handle the guitar and coax some music from it.

Yes.

But another question you should perhaps think about is: "Can you play the guitar WELL?"

And what that question means, is whether you would be able to play along in any situation, any genre, any band. And that answer for most people is: No.

yeap.very true.
anyone can play the guitar(anyone can strum HAHA )
but yea can you play the guitar well is another question.

to me its more like questioning me if i'm an musician or just merely somebody who plays a guitar. i'm just somebody who is able to play the guitar. definitely not musician material since i know nuts about theory.

Being able to play 15-20 chords .....is just the baby steps of knowing how to play the guitar.
Have you seen those classical guitarists with competent skills but can't play anything else without the music scores in front of them, I lived with one for close to 20 years, that person was me. What I did was an exercise in muscle memory trainings, nothing else. Can I play the guitar, the answer yes. Can I play music on the guitar? The answer is a big fat NO!
On the same token, have you seen guys at guitar shops, playing impressive riffs only to find out that's the only thing they know how to play. Again these people acquired the skill through muscle memory training, but can they play music, I believe the answer is NO.
There was this old man in church that used to play electric guitar during the prayer meetings, now this guy can accompany just about anyone in any keys. There was no fixed lead singer for the group so songs would invariably be sung in different keys from the previous weeks. No sweat, the old man will just move the keys around on the finger board to suit the singers. Now that's what I call knowing how to play the guitar.
Learning to start to play the guitar may take a few weeks, but mastering the instruments as in knowing how to play music on the guitar takes a life time. I am still on that journey and I hope that everyone else who loves this wonderful instrument will continue their journey of discovery.

agree with tomo 101%.
when ppl ask if i can play the guitar,i would say i know how to strum a few chords

does this count?

being able to improvise and play along on any song, solos or riffs/chords even those u first heard of , or after a few listenings with trial n error
learning how to play certain riffs and solos by listening only. and picking it up pretty fast.
without refering to tabs

but very little musical theory knowledge.

has a spastic pinky finger which onli works when playing slowly

so when ppl ask me if i can play the guitar. i'll say ok lah, so-so.
can play but not expert.

Are you the same Tomo from TGP?

I am not him, I hope you are not trying to ID me because of money issue. I paid my debtors off a long time ago, and it has been a long while since I have seen O $ P $ scrawled on my door. :D
I am the struggling wannabe guitar player Tomo.

By the way what is TGP?

hmm I can hear singers and play according to what key they sing also mean i know how to play guitar whee!! =D

when they say play the guitar, even knowing a little bit means that you can play the guitar.its only when they ask if you are able to play very well than its a different story.
for me,i'm modest, just say a little bit.be honest with your answer too if you are a beginner, coz i know a person who tells us that he is good but actually cant even play the first mini solo from crazy train and have poor techniques.People would only think that you are a f*cked up person

I can play if they fella tells me the key in advance. With a not-so-decent improvisation/ solo but enough to keep myself from being crucified, does that count?

I can play the guitar, and bass and drums as well, sure, but whether my playing is good is really up to who is listening. That's how I answer this question. Short and sweet.
