My brother will be coming from Singapore in May and i wanted an electric guitar but there aren't any in the country where i live so i asked him to bring me one from Singapore. He will be coming from thai airways and i also needed an amp and my choice was the nux mighty 8 as its small and it would fit in his luggage bag.So is it possible to take the guitar in the gig bag as a carry on and take the amp through luggage bag? and if any of you had an experience of travelling with the guitar on a plane then that would be helpful to.

for guitar can't carry on board cause its considered a bulky item if i'm correct. you can bring it overseas but can't carry it onboard.

so u've actually done it? and if i take it apart then it can be taken as a carry on? and if its not a bolt on then is there anyway of taking it?
and if the amp fits in the luggage bag then it won't be a problem right?

Actually can. If it's a bolt on, then take it apart, it'll fit perfectly fine. That's the only case, unless make special arrangements.
I'm consiering ibanez gax30 or epiphone les paul special 2 gt and both have a bolt on neck. How do u take it of exactly and after taking it of it will fit in the luggage bag? and i've also heard that u have to loosen the strings is it necessary?

When i took the sia a380 overseas, they have a service where they will handcarry the guitar for you to the storage compartment, as the guitar is too huge to be able to brought onboard, even a snare drum cant be brought up :( , hope that helps :)

i do it all the time leh,its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, so i hand carry to the plane so far did it about 10 times and it works. from experience it depends on airline when u show them and ask them at check in counter they will definitely ask you to check in, i carried it to the plane worse case is it will be too late most of the time to check in to the luguage compartment, they will have to put it at the crew compartment or something,

so far india, laos, tibet, cambodia, thailand, china, indonesia. doesnt matter bro, just have to depend on whether the crew or the check in counter in good mode anot. they can make exceptions if they wanted to.

What about loosening the strings is it necessary? and the gig bag will do or do u need a hard case?

i dunno whether this helps. i study in australia. been back and forth so many times. but i just tell the counter they check me in at a fragile section. Just need to make sure that it's under weight limit. They do treat the fragile stuff pretty well. so far no damage to my guitar. pretty sure they allow soft bags on board if you watched greg howe and denis chambers extraction dvd he brought the guitar on board the plane. lol

Oh, if you are checking in your guitar in a hardcase, do consider some sort of desiccant to absorb the moisture. I checked my guitar immediately at the carousel and it had a dripping wet (oooh yeah) bridge assembly. Major condensation blah blah blah as the cargo hold of the aircraft isn't as comfy as the pax cabin, pressure and temperature-wise.

Those desiccant packs that come with new guitars are handy in absorbing the after-effects of the aircon being switched off in the room, too. Anybody here bought some sort of dehumidifier machine for aircon rooms?

totally agree with the moisture. i came here for a week. took my guitar out all my strings were broken from rust. LOL. remember to take it out straight after landing.

If i put the guitar in gig bag and check it in fragile section then the moisture thing won't create a problem right? and doi have to detune the string i.e make them loose?

still will be a problem. moisture comes about by the difference in cabin temperature. it's in the cargo area so it's like close to 0. come out condensation is a lovelovelovelovelove. not sure about the loosening at all. so far never loosened mine. no problems with action and all. All i know is that if it's a classical guitar you have to loosen to save the neck cos no truss rod.

Regarding the gig bag... make sure it has some padding still. dunno how they treat the fragile section. So far I only travelled with hardcase checked in or gig bag hand carried

which airline u travelled through? and do they let u hand carry it and if they allow it as a carry on then there won't be the moisture problem?

i travelled through SIA. was allowed to hand carry but they would take it away once on board cos cannot stow overhead or something. I forgot whether moisture then was a problem though. if they do not stow it in the baggage compartment there shouldn't be a problem with moisture. on board the planes they have the HEPA filters which help with moisture and bacteria if i'm not wrong. don't quote me on that.
