Can the Epiphone LP Custom+EMGs do In Flames?

Hi, I'm looking forward to buy/trade for an Epiphone Les Paul Custom.

I was wondering if I would be able to get the "new" In Flames sound for lead guitar, if I install EMGs.

I don't know a good combination for Björn Gelotte's lead tone. I've been told he uses double EMG-85s but I also read on Wikipedia that the EMG-81 is good for a bridge pickup, and the EMG-85 for the neck. Can anyone help me out with this?

My current gear is a B.C. Rich Warbeast-1 with 85/81 for neck/bridge respectively, and a Boss MT-2 distortion pedal going to a Laney LX35D which provides some reverb.

Some nice examples would be "I'm The Highway" and "Suburban Me".

Thanks for viewing, and please feel free to post any comments. Like what the different EMGs do so I can experiment, and whether I should do an upgrade of my amp. =)

Back in the days of jamming at Boon's 9-10 yrs ago, I used an Aria Pro H/S/S config guitar tuned to C standard thru a Sansamp GT-2 thru the Jazz Chorus for my In Flames sessions... My other guitarist was using a Samick Flying V copy thru a Metalzone thru the Jazz Chorus... Those were the good times...

My point here is that dont let the equipment be a drawback for u to cover ur fav band.. Its more than just that.. I'm kinda sleepy now and I hope what I said makes sense..

I miss playin Jotun... :???:

Well it's not always the guitar man. The amplifier plays a bigger role in getting the sound you want. Besides why not go for your own sound? Anyway not to be a wet blanket but you'll probably end up disappointed with the epiphone as well. Keep your guitar and save up for an amp perhaps?

Okay, I'll take that into consideration. As my current guitar has a basswood body, I am thinking of getting the LP Custom as it has a Mahogany body, LP body shape, and it's in Alpine White! =)

Oh yea. Can you please explain a little more as to why I might be disappointed with the purchase of an Epiphone Les Paul Custom? Really need to know more. Thanks!

because the reason u're not getting the tone u want doesnt lie in ur guitar. you have to realise that these tones u're hoping to get were achieved with very good equipment.

if u purchase an epi lp custom u'll probably land back to where u started. a change in amplifier is likely to change ur tone much more than a change of guitars.

squirrel is right. plug ur current guitar into a good tube amplifier, u'll hear a world of difference. why not look into distortion pedals also?

Well that particular epiphone you're looking at is a dependable guitar but say even if you own a Gibson Les paul custom and slap on EMG's onto it, you won't be able to get the sound that you're looking for. Those people run it through an endless loop of effects and processors to get their sound. You might get something close to that though but there will be something lacking. The closest you can get to getting a good sound and tone out of your guitar is by getting an amp. I play my guitar through a marshall MG 15 and i hate it so bad. Just waiting for my salary to come in then I'll swap to a Blackstar s1-100 or a Mesa Lonestar. Still thinking of what to get. For you if you're into all that high gain stuff, try looking at Mesa amps or fender hotrod amps

Okay, so I really should start with the amp first yea. Never heard of a "tube amp" before. My setup has always been this simple: One guitar, one pedal, one amp. No funny tricks. I would like to know more about these "tubes". Do they replace my amp or are they like pedals to add effects and such?

Tube's are in the amp but you know, not all tube amps sound good. In fact, tubes sound best just before they're about to "die". Just go to woodworkz in peninsula and check out the blackstar ht 5 amps. Not bad stuff, works on a combination of tubes and op amps.

a Peavey 5150 might do the trick. I would recommend this amp for heavy tones. the only drawback is that you cant crank it up at home.

Erm... because I play at a jamming studio and at other times, a very small stage, I want to keep my setup as simple as possible.

Also, upgrading my amp is good, but only when I play at home, as the jam studio provides an amp. So I realized that more often than not I play when I'm outside, not at home.

Took that into consideration and I am thinking of getting a good guitar and pedal, since I can carry them around everywhere I go, unlike amps. I guess I'll just have to fashion my own tone instead of following Björn.

I just found out that Swee Lee carries MIC Epiphones, so I have to resort to buying an MIK piece online if I decide to change my guitar. And I like my Boss MT-2 as it is. I feel the pedal provides enough distortion.

That being said, would the Epiphone LP Custom with EMGs get a nice tone for melodies, just like the two examples? I just found another: The Hell Song solo. Awesome tone.

another alternative to tube amps are rack preamps like the ADA preamps
others would be rocktron pirahna and tc electronics but they arent cheap too.
bout 1k for most of them.i hope this helps :)

lalalalalala.
the guitar is just a medium, where as the effects and amp play a larger role in getting that desired tone. pickups etc helps to nail the tone. since you wanna play your stuff in jamming studios etc, you should get a good pedal board, or, you can go to a good jamming studio with a monster amp.

ikekie, time to do some research on your side. unfortunately, we cant stuff all the information you need in this thread. google is a good start.

tube amps are expensive, loud, difficult to maintain and can sometimes be not practical for home usage, thats why solid state amps are fine for home use.

thats why i mentioned pedals. a good distortion pedal into the clean channel of your amp might get u great tones.

anyway, i'll just give u a rough illustration lah.. something like squirrels:

a 5000bucks guitar plug into a mesa lonestar will get u superb tones

that same 5k guitar plugged into a 10w solidstate amp will get u crap tones

a crappy 200bucks guitar plugged into a mesa lonestar can get u superb tones too, not the case if u plug it into a crappy amp.

just trying to emphasize the point that a change in amplifier can really improve ur tone much more than a change in guitar..

I understand. However I am unable to change the amp as it is not even mine. What I can change is the guitar, and maybe have one more pedal in case the amp doesn't have reverb.

Without starting another thread:
Is it possible to compare Tokai, Edwards, Orville and Epiphone LPs or is it just apples and oranges? I learnt that Epiphone was originally Orville... with a lower budget?

okay, its ur choice ultimately.

i'm pretty sure when u get one u'll be back to where u started.

okay, trying to be helpful, lemme give you a recommendation for a distortion pedal that can get you into the ballpark of those lead tones.

since u alrdy have very high output pickups in those emgs, i'd recommend a barber dirty bomb. go check out some of the videos. has more than enough gain for the stuff u play.

guitar is an expensive hobby... i uses the lx35d... the drive isnt that good as compared to some vintage pedals... and when i am using my fender tele and a yamaha pacifica (low end), there isnt any difference in sound... that's a fact... but good pedals can solve this problem and let you really hear wad you are paying for...

I googled for Barber Dirty Bomb, and found some really good reviews. So, where can I get this in Singapore? ...Or do I have to post another WTB. Heheh.

I live in a HDB, and if I am to get a new amp, it has to be around the same size as my Laney LX35D. Which makes it tough deciding.

I may want to get a reverb pedal then. Any recommendations? If I get both the Barber Dirty Bomb and the reverb pedal and am satisfied, I don't think I will need to get a new guitar for some time.

Thanks for all the help you guys have given me. Really appreciate it! =)
