can a guitar be plugged into a normal amp with input jack?

hey guys..
i've just remembered that i have this super big normal pa amp... its full chrome, metal and all... its kinda a amp system + woofer and subwoofer control panel... this thing can go REAL loud... it has this input jack and all, so is it possible to plug in my guitar and jam on it?
about distortion, i can get a pedal...

but im scared when i plug in... BOOM.

it will be ok for low volumes... but high volumes it will *boom* your speakers.
and your guitar would probably sound like shit too.

i did that when all i had back then was a hand-me-down guitar from my grandfather. it sounded fine though. but i wouldnt dare test it with a distortion in the chain. later KABABOOM!!!! :twisted: :twisted:

You could try getting a DI box and send to mixer ...
den to the sound system ...
Guitar -> DI -> mixer -> speaker

Alternatively ...
most line6 multifx are meant to be sent straight to the mixer and sound system.

^ yup. but it'll prob sound bad. i dont think PA amps are designed to handle guitar signals, especially with effects and with highly clipped signals.

Yes, do get a DI box or a pedal that has DI output. You don't wanna kill your expensive non guitar amp.

i'm plugging in my guitar-> multi-effx-> comp speakers. i dont wanna get an amp yet cuz i'm not staying here permanently, n amps r a burden to take along on flights. so far i've been doing that for a few mnths, n i think i've screwed those speakers lol.

I use monitor speakers to plug my guitar nowadays, sold my amp. Its like guitar > pedals > DI box > speakers. The speakers double as my PC speakers and my amp coz it has 2 line in. So far hasn't blown up yet. Hopefully won't anytime.

soft - its a Marantz PM7000 Intergrated Amplifier with HDAM controls...
plugged in are 4 speakers(not computer sized, the real "speaker" size)

MadWereWolfBoy, DI does not prevent amps/speakers from blowing. especially in re_unknown's situation.

for recording into comp, you might want to read up other threads in the forum.

DI boxes enable you to play direct thru those large p.a. speakers you see in concerts. it would be kinda wasted if you paid that much just to play thru your home p.a. system i'm sure your parents paid big bucks for. get a proper guitar amp k


MadWereWolfBoy, why not stick a mic in front of your guitar ampfor recording? after all, amps do play a part in shaping your tone yea? but the downside is mics do pick up a little background noise, whereelse a d.i. box would not

i used to plug guitar-> multi-effx-> comp in the past but when i do that to my present comp with the mic volume turned up there's this 'eee' sound that comes out of my comp. in fact there's this noise everytime i dont mute the mic volume. i didnt have this prob in my previous comp. is it a soundcard issue?

ok now, lets rave abt the Beta Aivin DS-100 Distortion pedal at standardvalue woodlands.

Maybe you could try out Digitech stompboxes...
They have 2 outputs: to amp and to mixer

Ur speakers might work well with the output to the mixer
