Cajon Solo

Dear all,

I have posted a video on youtube performing a cajon solo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-woCeN81WrI&feature=email

This is a solo where I keep the rhythm on a block with my foot, in an off-beat tempo and solo over it, always keeping the tempo strictly only in an off-beat pattern. I have named this style of solo-ing SOOT (solo-ing on an off-beat tempo). It's interesting and challenging. The solo edges towards more of a technical one, where I play different combinations, permutations, metric modulations, sixtuplets, cross-rhythms, etc. It is my aspiration to share music with the rest of the world.

Hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks,
Kamal B

Awesome shit bro! that was madness!

I just bought a cajon and starting to pick it up. Not a percussionist so, any tips?

Haha, thanks Kashfun.

Where did you buy your cajon from? What brand is it?

Well, for starters I guess it will be good to learn the basic hand techniques. I have developed original hand techniques for this drum. It will be good to know the basic grooves and play them on the cajon - pop, rock, reggae, etc.

Make it a point to know your cajon, your particular one, well. Try tapping on all the different parts on the surface playing area, and don't just stop there. Try playing on the other sides as well. You'll be surprised to find out there are nice tones you can get from the other supposedly 'non-playing' sides.

And don't forget to watch and listen to other cajon players. It is an interesting drum with great hand techniques that can be played on it.

Have fun!
Kamal
