Buying guitar from overseas is cheaper than buying from local

If the price is not much different, then better to buy here lah. U get to try the guitar and test it and bring back if anything is wrong, and u get service when needed. Online may be cheaper, but u kana 1 time only, you will damn sian. Insurance also takes very long to claim...

THings like amps got local warranty, and i guess some local shops are priced pretty competitive alr. In fact i got my marshall amp from davis cheaper than the online price without shipping yet. THere are good dealers here like blackwood lah, reward them abit for their effort also:)

How you do that-.-

I ordered a guitar and it cost me $250 to ship over, dunno what Total Custom GST $120 + VPOST Charges Holding fee $122 and not including the 7% GST....

you are definitely right.
getting guitar oversea is much more cheaper.

imagine:
1.2k for fender Amercian standard Strato
700 for fender Mexican tele.

you make the calculation after a trip to bras basah.

fender MIA so cheap ?
i thought it's around 999 USD in musician friend?
conversion = around 1.4 = 1.4k + shipping + GST = ....

you got better lobangs ? pls share ! :)

Cheaper to buy overseas?

I have experience buying overseas stores (electric, acoustic, bass, cymbal sets) and it is not all the time you get a cheaper deal. Besides shipping cost, gst, courier charge and the foreign exchange premium you got to pay, you might get a blemished item or a knob that can't fully turn or worse still a warped neck or one with a few dead spots. Worse of all you get the wrong guitar that is worth less than what you paid for or you get the wrong colour.

I had one package labelled wrongly but it was the right guitar and colour though. Sometimes the store uses cartons of other guitars to pack and the handlers may get confused as well.

Of course if you can save $2500 for a guitar, it is worth taking that risk as (I assume) high end guitars are normally firstly, good quality, comes in solid hardcase and would come in a padded carton box.

All these though would increase the freight charges if you have not it built-in.
Do check around the local stores first before buying, especially acoustics as they are prone to neck warp.

To skyline

Well, vpost charges but its better than bringing in from places that overcharge locally though. Not hinting at anywhere

I use this webby called www.gearhounds.com they do free international shipping for most orders 999 or more though.. But since I focus mainly on Dean which is one of the few guitar brands they carry.. so yea..

They bring in Dean, ESP, Schecter, Minarik and Washburn so if you're looking for gibson/fender/jackson/BCrich/PRS/Ibanez afraid this webby isn't the one for you..Try ishibashi. Its a japanese website though personally I haven't shipped in from them though I heard from friends they do get the job done. Pricing to me is unclear. Yup :D

Generally, buying guitar gear overseas tends to be cheaper than in sg because of importing, customs, etc. - also, there's a lot more used gear overseas. Try to check on ebay for people who will ship worldwide.

some one quoted
me 1400 for a MIJ telecaster.

might as well bought a ticket to tokyo and bought it myself?

what you think?

Speaking about buying yourself, that might actually prove to be the best method. My buddy went on a trip to Hong Kong, enjoyed himself for a week there, and lovingly hand-carried back to Singapore one beautiful John Mayer signature Strat, at a very very good price!

You do away with all the hassle, can even try the guitar out.

:)

I'd be interested to know what airline your buddy took and how exactly he "lovingly hand carried" it back. Does that mean he was allowed to bring the guitar through security and onto the aircraft himself? Storing it in a closet I presume?

I've heard that airlines (and especially security these days) will not allow this in most cases. And unless you have a ATA flight case, I would never, ever trust the airline to check my guitar as baggage. To the best of my knowledge none of the airlines will take any responsibility whatsoever for damage on a guitar that was checked as baggage.

you just spoke my mind...taking SIA back from hongkong i was forced to leave my purchase with my cousin before boarding the plane... there is a limit to cabin luggage.. and yes checking in would be disastrous
