Buying Electric Guitar

I am thinking of getting an electric guitar together with a small amp. There are so many brands out there. Really quite confused with so much choices.

My budget is probably 800 - 1000 for the guitar and the amp. I had bad experience with cheap acoustic guitars before. Want something is that gonna be pretty solid and most importantly very playable.

Any good eletric guitars to suggest?

maybe u can ask whitestrat.. he seems to know alot about fender strats :) u can also read other threads. there are a few guitarists who wants suggestions about their new guitars.. hope that helps..

I think before you go buy an electric and resign yourself to pain, frustration and loneliness, you need to first think carefully what you want. What kind of music you like. What do you want to learn? Are you learning from a teacher? self taught? or what? Do you want to learn lead? Rhythm?

Honestly, a Fender Stratocaster, Ibanez RG, Ibanez S, Schecter, Edwards etc etc are all more or less the same. It's mostly preference, and they do cater to different players.

If you want a complete all rounder, honestly? I'd suggest an Ibanez Hum-Sing-Hum configuration in an S series shape because it's got lots to offer, comfortable to play, and won't really be that expensive. Just make sure you go for a standard trem style, or a ZR trem rather than an edge floating bridge or the like. This should be good enough to tide you for the next 5 to 7 years of learning.

Then once you've stabilised your playing and are ready to move to the next step, then you start exploring other constuctional differences in other guitars like Les Pauls, Parker Flys, PRS, etc etc. Find out why they sound the way they do. Learn more about guitar construction and wood before you move on to the next. You'll be surprised that after learning all this? You might move to another guitar you've never thought of...

Of course, if you have the $$$, I'd recommend a Musicman Silhouette, but that's almost 4 times the price, and a whole new category of guitar...

For amps, I'd recommend you buy a basic amp like a Peavey Rage or a Fender GDec. Learn to play first, then spend money to upgrade. If you're given a 100W Marshall Head at this point, you won't know what to do with it, and you really won't know what you're doing. You're wasting time and money. And you'll have no baseline to work off. You wont' know what is acceptable. Only what you think is bad compared to a MESA (which, to me is overhyped... see?) If you think only about buying MESAs, then all you'll think of is tubes, tubes, tubes. Then a fantastic amp like a Fender Cyber Twin or a Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue (I'll take this over any MESA any day!!!) or a nice Soldano or Vox will never enter your radar... sadly.

So, don't rush to spend you money just like that. Get something good and basic, then evaluate your own playing and knowledge as a musician, and move on.
