Box drum?

Hi all,

During a couple of gigs recently I noticed some percussionists / drummers using a type of 'box drum' which they sit on and is able to produced some very varied and complex sounds. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I really would like to get one - it can do the job of a complete drum set for most pop and acoustic rock songs!

You can find them at Swee Lee, maybe for cheap during the sale this weekend too.

"The Cajon (Pronounced ka-HONE), which is the Spanish word for box, has been part of Afro-Peruvian music since the 19th Century. The instrument originated in colonial Peru, when the slaves whose African drums had been forbidden by their masters, used wooden boxes intended to hold fruits or overturned drawers to play their rhythms on. Later the Cajon was officially added to the instrumentation of the vals criollo, or "creole waltz." It is now a national emblem for Peruvians, and an indispensable part of any ensemble that performs the traditional folk music of Peru."

Whoa whoa - what's stave and segmented? :)

Any recommendations on my first Cajon purchase?

I was kidding by the way. A stave or segmented Cajon would be freakin heavy!

Here's a page that describes the different types of shell construction

Joshua Tree Percussion makes some of the nicest stave shells

Anyway, can't help you with your cajon search, not much experience with them, though I've been thinking about getting one too. Hope someone who knows chimes in.

Cajons!

I've played with a few cajons.
They are great accompliments for acoustic sets. It's edge over congas and djembes (great acoustic percussion instruments too) is that it has the ability to produce bass and snare sounds. One good cajons, you can hear the different sounds between the bass and the snare sounds. I've played with some that not matter where you hit, it sounds the same. ugh.

Check out my thread, i'm selling mine.
