okay, ive just picked up the most basic pedals in swee lee, the boss ds-1 distortion, its a good thing i followed pastor glenn's advice on this one and did not pickup the zoom multi effects.

now that ive got a distortion pedal of my own, where do i go from there, and what other gear should i get for my pedal board (even though i dont have one...)

this is one of my first few times handling pedals and distortion gear so i consider myself quite new to the gadgetry.

thanks for your advice!

after the ds-1 u can go for a chorus, wah, delay, tubscreamer, phaser......

but collect slowly, coz in this way u can finish exploring a pedal before befoure buying another one

ibanez DE7 gives you more "feel" to yr guitar sound. I own that too, i would say it is good to have that pedal... :)

not really..

delay pedals , errr repeat the whole bunch of suff u are playing.. similar to echoes but of same volume if i'm not wrong..
well explore ur pedal.. se what kind of music u play cuz it will determin what u will need.. best explore all genres as haha its an excuse to get more.. but remember.. buying on impulse is a big big no no..

i'm on 2 pedals so far it been a yr n i'm not done with it yet to get another pedal.. well my forecast in the future would be the digitech whammy.. but hey.. i gotta try it out and seee if its almost same as the reall whammy bar..

the de7 is really a good pedal to add or any other delay and echo pedal. really adds color to ur soloing

another must get is a wah. i recommend the JD 535Q wah real versatile and nice!

and maybe consider a booster so that u can boost for ur solos or smth.

compression maybe another thing u wanna consider next time after getting the basics. i may get one next year hehehe

well i am also thinking of a whammy pedal....

IMHO a whammy pedal has limited application that might not be appreciated by the effects newbie such as fenderrules. Some others have suggested more 'conservative' and common effects which I would consider more sensible choices such as delay and chorus. I'd bet that if there were a league table of the 'most bought effects type' then a distortion/fuzz would be at the top with delay and chorus jousting for a tied 3rd place. Wah might come next. For good reason - these types of effects are tried and trusted 'working man (or woman's)' pedals which can be used in a very wide range of scenarios whereas I'd consider a whammy pedal (along with things like pitch shifters, harmonizers) as a bit more specialist in nature.

Not to say that a whammy pedal is a *bad* choice by any means - how you use an effect is entirely up to the imagination, but for a new user - I'd recommend not. :)

all the suggestions of getting gadgets while might be helpful, but how about actually sitting down, explore how the effect(in this case, a ds-1) react with the amp, with the guitar and the playing. End of it, use it to play/write something even before thinking about what other stuff to get..

listen to more music/bands that uses lots of effect, hear how they use the effect and go about searching for effect to get can be much useful than checking out what other recommend.. imho.

i got a multi fx last time to try out.. turn out i only used the distortion, wah and tuner.. so tt's all i got.. haa..

Actually I would just suggest getting to know your DS-1 really well first....
In relation to your guitar, your practice amp or any other jam room amp you come across using....

As I don't know what kind of music you play or whether you are a lead as opposed to a rhythm kind of person, so I can't really recommend anything to you...

But I think once you've mastered your pedal, you yourself would know what you would need to further your sound or tone...in relation to your chosen music genre that is....

ok just to let you all know my im more of a rhythm player than a leader

and, i like punk and indie. my favourite bands include green day and electrico..

thank you all!

im learning lead, but im not up to that level you guys are yet..

here are the skills ive learnt, ever since the day ive picked up guitar

1. chords. duh, every guitarist should know that. me too
2. power chords. learnt that quickly while reading guitar world in the library. now an addict.
3. scales. i know one blues scale and the G pentatonic scale. well, i know them but dont know how to apply them.
4. transposing skill. i have the ability to shift from a key to another.
5. palm mute. but only know how to chug chug (downstroke) and not chugga chugga (you know what i mean)
6. strumming. one thing amazing i discovered about myself is that i can follow almost anybodys strumming rhythm. ive discovered that when i led worship in cell. and a lot of people i know say that i have very good strumming teechnique.
7. alternative picking. almost mastered it, but still not clean enough with distortion though.

yeah thats all i know. a lot of people tell me i can be a good guitarist. and i believe it. :)

u bet u can become a great player! we all start off somewhere! u'll do well ur hardworking!

now, just try some easier solos like those GNR or metallica ones. for e.g. the nothing else matters solo is cool!

yes...yes i can. one of my favourite guitarists besides YM, Vai and Satriani is also brad delson from linkin park and jerry horton from papa roach.

man, cant wait to see my pedalboard 2 or 3 years from now....
