Boss Delay Pedals and Delays

Hi guys im after a new Delay pedal and my main influences now are bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Rascals, Interpol, The Libertines, pretty much Alternative Rock bands and most of them use a delay. I know very little of delay pedals.

So, whats the Difference between the Boss delay pedals like DD-3, DD-5, DD7? The bands that I have mention use either one of the three boss pedals stated and some use a Memory Man Deluxe and a Danelectro Reel Echo so i dont know whats best for me. Hope someone can help me out here .

dd3/5/7- differences can be gotten from boss website(search round google for it). Its basically different model with different setting, functions available.

we also wont be able to tell you whats good for you, coz we dont know in the first place how you want to use the delay, when you are not sure yourself.

for a start, forget about the bells and whistle of the many delay pedals out there. Just get a normal one, play around with it and listen to how you can use the thing.

Delay, is a personal thing. I have used, owned delay pedals from 100 plus dollars to 1k plus. Some with basic functions, some with over the top sound. But end of the day, the biggest differences aint in the price nor sound, but how to use it to get sound that fit in a piece of music iam making.

For delay, theres couple of usage,

1) Thickening of overdriven/distortion sound, ala yngwie
2) Slapback echo, ala brian setzer
3) dotted 8th, ala the edge(u2), david gilmour
4) oscillation, ala mono
5) Looping, ala battles

the above just a really really brief mentioning of what can be done with delay and who uses those. If you have no idea who or what band it is, just youtube of google for them. Sorry, bout those bands that you listed, their sound doesnt really seem to have much delay going on for me, so i cant tell how they use it.

So you mean any one delay pedal can give me all these effects?

1) Thickening of overdriven/distortion sound, ala yngwie
2) Slapback echo, ala brian setzer
3) dotted 8th, ala the edge(u2), david gilmour
4) oscillation, ala mono
5) Looping, ala battles

and that i just have to find the one that suits me?

nope, not all, some can, some cant. You wont be able to find a one size fit all kinda delay in general, and it will be harder if you are not sure what delay effect is for and how you can utilise it.

since you wanna try out delay effect and new to it, just get one within your budget right now. Learn how to use it, listen to what it does and how it react with whatever you play on the guitar. My first delay was a dd 3 back in 1994. Learnt lotsa things with it even though its quite a minimal delay compared to what i have came across till now.

Once you have the idea of what/how a delay sound like, you can then read up, search for more info among the many effect forums on how what can be done with delay.

the speed of learning will increase when you have playing time with a delay pedal and continuing to read up online among the various effect forums for delay info.

I'm one of those guys who has delay pedals and just adjust here adjust there until something nice comes up.....

Of course I know now with experience that certain sounds can be gotten by twisting knobs a certain way, but largely by and still, I twist around until something happens.

DD3s are awesome for someone starting out.
