blues driver and tube driver

No, we're not talking solely about the ability to induce "fuzziness" by both pedals. They're two differently voiced pedals, with different circuits and each with its own sonic signature. Classic fuzzes can be generally classified into 3 categories: Tonbender, FuzzFace and the Big Muff, and each category has a completely different voicing and "raspiness" to the tone, with very minimal sonic overlap with each other. Heck, even within the fuzzfaces (original units and clones) there can be subtle but audible differences.

if we aren't referring to the fuzz inducing capacity of the ff/ bm, then one of these, effectively, isn't a fuzz unit.

quote: Classic fuzzes can be generally classified into 3 categories: Tonbender, FuzzFace and the Big Muff, and each category has a completely different voicing...

1. if these are categories, then it's a challenge really, to think of a unit in each category which is a member by function but differentiated by name: which other pedal is a Fuzz Face by nature but isn't called one? in the NIKE category, which other shoe is a NIKE by nature but isn't called one?

2. yes, the voicings are differentiated, but are they not still fuzz units?

i agree with jdawg. even fuzz faces have many audible differences between clones and originals. even muffs differ, a 70s muff (ala smashing pumpkins) would differ from units made now.

they are fuzz units, but wouldn't get you the eric johnson tone due to the different voicing.

He probably meant sub-categories of the same grouping. You can have apples but of different sub-types. They are all called apples but they taste different to an extent, not in terms of its core taste as an apple, but in sweetness, sourness etc. You can use the same analogy for beer as well. :)

But I think the point is if you want to have a similar tone, then maybe using what EJ has might bring you closer. I agree the FF and BM sound different enough tonally to affect the overall sound, while all being fuzz units.

On another note, has anyone tried the offerings from BYOC for the Big Muff copies?[/i]

Hmmm, I'm not really sure where you're going with your argument. You responded to a post inquiring on the availability of the fuzzface, to which you said that one can get similar results to a fuzzface using a bigmuff. If by "similar results", you simply mean the ability to simply get a "fuzzy" type of sound, then yes -- but this kind of generalization is akin to suggesting any fuzz unit can achieve the desired result, as long as the level of fuzziness can be equalled, yes?

However, if you're saying that one can get a good and close approximation of a fuzzface's tone using a Big Muff, then that's a different story. 8O

with all due respect, Tone Bender, Fuzz Face & Big Muff are not categories, minor divisions or otherwise.

they are different fuzz types- no contest- but still within the fuzz domain.

this end of the thread has further digressed from the initial blues driver/ tone driver enquiry. my reiteration here: it's not an adversity to pursue a specific fuzz type tone by trying different fuzz types, as long as one doesn't rope in a non-fuzz unit into the picture.

hi people, what's the diff between blues driver and tube driver? which one would u guys recommend for an eric johnson tone, i know that one pedal wouldnt make u get eric johnson tone immediately, but which pedals (besides blues driver and tube driver) would get me a tone close to his?

:D thanks people, in advance

Alot of EJ's tone is in his amplification. late 60's Plexi Marshalls.

His violin lead tone is actually the Butler Tube Driver. You could get close with a Bad monkey with the gain up but you still need a slightly overdriven amplifier or perhaps pedal after the BM.

The Blues Driver is a tonally transparent overdrive pedal which will not thicken up your tone. It will though add overdrive if you already have a good thick tone almost in the region on EJ.

EJ's fuzz is actually used more often on the rhythm parts of his songs. The best example would be "Camel's Night Out"

What exactly about EJ's tone do you want though? There are a few distinctive's I can think about.

hi again... the little big muff is actually quite noisy for me.. would it be better if i used it with an OD pedal? any recommedations?
thanks people!
