what about guitar polishing compounds? do you think they are a marketing gimmick and perhaps would work not much better than the car polishing products you recommended?

I think those guitar finish rubbing compound would work as well. Personally, I am not too familiar with them. From specialty point of view, car buffing trade is very developed, arguably the best and most advance in class. For this reason, I gladly learn what car buffing trade does. If you have those guitar finish rubbing compound, you should use it as well. As long as the right buffing approaches are applied, i think good results can be expected. Cheers.
